Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

Ya but that makes you one of the top 15 paid coaches in the entire nation. The coaches know how it works, the next contract that comes along will make Fred one of the top 2 or 3 paid coaches for about a year, then someone else gets a new contract and they move in to the top 3.

The point is, we could make Fred the top paid coach in the conference tomorrow, and for reasons completely out of JP or ISU's control he could be the 7th best paid coach again the next day. Fred is a smart dude, he's not sweating being the 7th best paid coach in the league.

Probably not, but if he can use this situation to get more money from ISU like he has the past few off-seasons, he would be dumb to not do it. The guy has 4 kids, and he has the ability to make sure they wont have to ever worry about money. That being said, the point of me bringing this up is in response to people saying Fred should come out and say he will be here next season. It wont happen that easy. If Fred is back at ISU next season, I'm confident that it will be with a new contract.

Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

I really don't think Fred is trying to renegotiate his contract this year. Unlike previous years, JP has already stated that we've already offered everything we can to Fred. And in previous years the new contract was already negotiated and signed within 2-3 weeks of the season ending.

If Pollard were actually to say that, then he's not trying hard enough. You never let money be the reason you lose a guy like Fred Hoiberg.

Money wont be the reason ISU loses Fred. However, It would make perfect sense for Fred to use the current rumors to his advantage and get more money for next season if he does decide to return.

Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

His agent would not be pleased if he did #2

Like I said, i don't expect him to say that. But he easily could if he wanted.

I just think he's considering the job so there's nothing to be said. Though I don't recall him saying much concerning other NBA jobs he didn't pursue in the past either.

I completely agree. I was just working with the hypothetical there.
It's still far from sure that we even lose Fred.

Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

If your dream job opened and your current job offered you a raise would you stay or go? You're independently wealthy as it is and money really is of no issue. If his dream is the NBA no amount of money could make him (or you) stay. Most of us don't even get a chance to fulfill a dream.

I don't have any sources, but I am fairly sure Fred has a new ISU contract on the table ready to sign. If he turns down the Bulls, you'll know it because the new contract will be announced.

Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

It is funny that so many people talk about the "pressure" Fred is under because of Ames, ISU, winning, etc. etc.

Feed eats pressure and craps rainbows, seriously I doubt from a health standpoint being in Ames and at ISU is any harder on his health than being in the NBA. Be realistic and think it through - I know for a FACT, first hand how competitive Fred is. We were classmates and I knew his mom well when I lived in Ames. That kind of competitiveness is very binary - on or off, there is very little gradient to it.

If he is coaching ISU or the Bulls or the freaking badminton team at the Iowa Games his self induced pressure is about the same and external factors don't move the needle for him.

All you have to do is see how clutch he was in his playing career to understand that.

IMO, Fred Hoiberg will be the Cyclones MBB Coach next year.

No way that Fred wants his final game as a Cyclone Coach to be the opening round loss to UAB in the Tourney.

Agree 100%. However, maybe hes not ready to take his dream job right now. Maybe he is, but the rest of his family is not ready for him to do it yet. If that is the case, it would be in his best interest to act like he is interested in taking his dream job right now, and use that to renegotiate a new contract that pays his family more money.

yeah. and they'll bump the NCAA buyout to $5 million and keep the NBa buyout at $500k. then we'll do it all again next year.

Agree. If Fred is back at ISU next season, I would be shocked if it did not play out just like this.

Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

A lot of people are talking about money and how it doesn't matter to Fred and it "isn't about the money". I like what CW said on fanatics Friday night (can't wait for the show today!!) MAKE IT ABOUT MONEY! If it isn't about money, make it about money. JP give him a huge raise and give him what he wants. He is a once in a lifetime Cyclone coach and he should be treated like one. If it's not about money, make it about money if our favor. Make him an offer he can't refuse.

Money is linear. The more you make, the more you spend. And don't foget the gov't takes a good portion of the paycheck first. Never, ever assume that money is of no issue. Plenty of pro athletes end up broke. 78% of NFL athletes are broke within 2 years of finishing their career and 60% of NBA athletes are broke within five years of retiring.
I assume Fred has his financial house in better order than most but to assume he is set for life is naive. Throw in that he is probably looking at taking care of his family for the foreseeable future due to his health and I would think that money does matter.
