Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

The buzz has been really palpable that Fred is going to Chicago within the last three hours. Stronger than it's ever been. May be imminent.

It feels fairly quiet to me, there was much more buzz on Friday. I do see your tweet however:

Fred Hoiberg
going to the Chicago Bulls? Rumors have been circulating for awhile but within the last few hours it has been palpable. #waitin

There are lots of moving parts but it's sounding like Hoiberg to the Bulls could happen very soon or it could be drawn out awhile longer, but there is still a possibility he stays

Re: REPORT: Alvin Gentry, not Fred Hoiberg, favorite to replace Tom Thibodeau

No, the team loses any rights they have to his employment if they fire him as they terminated his contract and owe him according to the terms of the contract. If Thibs wanted to take another job on his own while under contract then the team still has the rights to control his employment which is why they have not fired him yet. They will either have to get someone to agree to give them compensation for him or retain him as head coach because they lose all rights to him once he's fired.

Can the Bulls repurpose him to be a very well compensated janitor?

He could leave soon

Or

He could leave later

Or

He could stay.

How insightful!

It doesn't matter that everyone knows Thibs isn't going to coach the Bulls next year. A trade is still possible. It's more about his new team securing him before he's a free agent. If you wait for him to get fired you could get outbid by someone who doesn't necessarily have the pieces to offer a better trade.

Thibs has to sign off on a trade. Its not like he is a player that can be traded with no say in the matter. If Thibs is only interested in coaching one team and let's that be known, the Bulls don't have any leverage to force a deal if they are 100% committed to having a.different coach next year.

So anything could happen?

A source close to a source of someone that works for the Bulls says being the coach of the Bulls is a bad job.

Re: BLUM: The Mayor's dilemma

If they called you right now would you go coach the Bulls?

Yes, I would take it only for the money, but I'm not currently coaching basketball at my Alma Mater, with a pre-season top 10 team coming back. Nor do I make anywhere near $1 million a year, let alone what that job would pay. If I was in Fred's position, no, I wouldn't take the Bulls job. And it has nothing to do with "Dream job vs. regular job." Taking ISU to the final four would be a huge accomplishment. Obviously it's not a given he gets the team there, but this is probably one of the best chances, on paper, ISU has had to do that.

As I said before, the NBA isn't going anywhere. It's not like this is Fred's last shot to go there. If I knew I were that hot of a name for the NBA, the Bulls would not be my Choice. And I certainly wouldn't trade a possibility like Fred has next year with ISU for any job in the NBA.

I don't personally know Fred though, maybe the Bulls is his dream. There isn't going to be any margin of error as the Bulls coach though. He will be expected to come in and win right away. If Rose is healthy and the team isn't in the finals in two years. Grumblings will start. Maybe that's the challenge he's looking for.

I probably think completely different than any professional coach, that's my guess why I am not one. With a young family and recent heart surgery, I'm thinking a little stability for a few years would be nice. A jump to the NBA just doesn't say stability to me.

Re: Tom Thibodeau: Business as usual 'until they tell me' otherwise

Bulls are trying to get draft picks from Orlando and/or new Orleans. Probably why they are moving slow with this. This is why its possible hoiberg has an agreement in place but it hasn't been announced yet.

Makes sense.

There is also the small matter of Fred not being able to do anything coaching wise until July. No reason to rush anything.

Re: REPORT: Alvin Gentry, not Fred Hoiberg, favorite to replace Tom Thibodeau

How about the Bulls keep Thibs to run the defense, then hire Gentry as co-head coach to run the offense? Thibs can play the Buddy Ryan role and Gentry the Mike Ditka role, it's worked in Chicago before. They could do like an odd couple reality show where Thibs hates Gentry at first but learns to respect him as the season goes, kind of Remember the Titans-ish too. I need to get in touch with Bulls management to offer up this solution.

Rumor was that Thibs was told to hire an offensive coach last off season and refused. Also, I think Tuesday evening (draft lottery) into Wednesday will be when a lot of pieces start to move, once teams figure out where they are drafting and what they can offer.
