Does the legacy of the "mayor" change after this?

Are you freaking kidding me?!?! This fan base is made up of a bunch of whining a-hole babies if there is even an ounce of sour grapes. Sure, be disappointed when he jumps to the the Bulls, but he has done nothing but win in his time here and helped recapture an incredible atmosphere in Ames for basketball again. Hilton Magic became a joke under McDoormat and it only took Hoiberg one season (even that first season was an improvement to the joke of the previous years) to get ISU back to the dance. And kept us there for the entirety of his tenure. A reg season conference title would have been nice, a final four appearance would have been nicer, but to even talk about these things without laughing was a herculean accomplishment that I will forever be incredibly grateful for.

He only holds the highest winning percentage in the history of ISU Men's basketball. 4th highest win total behind Johnny and and couple of guys in the distant past. It only took him 5 seasons to get over 100 wins for crying out loud!! I love the passionate fans at ISU, but this pity party, end of the world, Hoiberg is abandoning us crap is absofreakinglutely the biggest bunch of crap I have every been privy to from fans of this fine institution.

Maybe it is just he internet bringing the worst sort of manners out of people, but this completely unfathomable negativity coming from fans against a guy who has given so much over this last half decade and succeeded more than anyone could have possibly predicted when he first came in is embarrassing and infuriating. I'm taking a break from this site for a while, my blood pressure can't handle the magnitude and classlessness of this incredibly poor behavior any longer.

I know that there are plenty of fans relaying their support and thanks and that it isn't everyone being jerks, but my goodness, far too many of you are acting like spoiled entitled children with absolutely no respect.

/end rant

TLTR version: All the jerky little crybaby fans need to become squawk fans and GTFO or STFU.

Of course it will. He bails on the program he's no longer 'The Mayor', he's just another coach, no different than the rest.

I guess the only difference is that he tricked the fan base into thinking he was something different, which is unfortunate.

Not to rant, but how couldn't it change his legacy? He's choosing pride over loyalty. That's not the guy the donors were sold on.

He's making an absolute joke out of the athletic department by proving everyone else right.

Nobody needs to do either of those two things.

I'm ****** off. It happens... it is what it is. You can tell me all you want about whatever your wall of text was about but it won't change how i feel.

You clearly have a hardon for the guy.

Reality of the fact is that he took the program to the precipice and bailed on it when it needed him most. You can sit here and try to tell people how to think, but it won't work, not everyone is too jaded to see it for what it is.

Time will tell, but this would be a whole different feeling if Hoiberg were to do this after something like 10 years and completely maxing out the basketball program's achievements- whatever they may be- as opposed to 5 and leaving things unfinished.

Brad Stevens at least got two legit shots at a NC before heading out.

Tim Floyd only stayed 4 and I personally didn't see him in the greatest light after his quick departure.

Obviously it's different with the connections/pasts with ISU, but it feels more and more like FH's agenda at ISU was to cut his teeth as a coach before making the leap.

He's brought a lot of things to life, but unless he's got a great explanation (which he probably will because Fred Hoiberg never fails), he's leaving behind loose ends and, per himself, unachieved goals.

I think the effectiveness of that pitch was more diminished by him constantly being the one who was looking at NBA jobs, not players thinking they can't get to the NBA through ISU.

Diallo and apparently Coffey appear to agree.

I missed and can't find the reports about Diallo...did he publicly say CFH's potential NBA situation turned him off? Really just wondering...good old 'Google' didn't produce.

Fred will still always be "The Mayor" and have a unique legacy at ISU that we probably will not see again in our lifetime: growing up in Ames, being a ballboy, becoming an all-time Cyclone great, then coming back to coach his alma mater and bringing us a 4 year stretch of success that hadn't been achieved in the program before. All that can never be taken away from him, no matter how this all goes down. I think if he does go, there are a few main pain points that will continue to sting the fans for a few years down the road though.

-Unfinished business: The loss to UAB last year, not dethroning KU from their streak of regular season titles, not advancing past the sweet 16, leaving before Niang and Co's final season, etc. It feels like ISU hasn't reached their potential yet and we are so, so close to breaking through.

-Public comments: Saying multiple times that ISU was his "dream job", talking about hoping to retire at ISU, promising a national championship banner, telling players (Thomas) he's coming back, etc. Look, we all knew the NBA was on Fred's radar, but comments like these gave fans hope that he really did want to stay here his whole coaching career. We all know that Ames is a special place to CFH and his family, but you don't have to make comments like these to the media if you know leaving for the NBA is your ultimate goal.

-#HoibergWatch - It's a different age than it used to be with Twitter, social media, etc. but I think fans will remember how this dragged on for multiple weeks and just seemed to get uglier and uglier. Granted, before the Bulls job opened, CFH didn't necessarily need to come out and say anything, but now that Thibs is gone is seems like the more details that get released, the worse this is looking for FH. Hearing about telling recruits he couldn't commit to being here, how he interviewed in person for the Orlando job, and other details that make this move look like it was already in the works has really rubbed fans the wrong way.

I do think Fred has some chance to save some face when he finally does come out and say something to the public, but until then things are just going to get uglier between Cyclone fans and him. Fred will still always have a special legacy at ISU no matter what, but I think if he leaves now us fans are left with a sour taste in our mouths and think to ourselves "what could have been" if he stayed.

This is the best I've seen it put. I wouldn't change anything you said. Exactly how I feel.

I don't blame him for anything he did, except for not being 100% committed to doing his job before his surgery and it maybe costing us our best recruit in program history.

It blunts his legacy for sure. He had a chance to eclipse all other ISU coaches in history. Hilton could have been Hoiberg Coliseum someday. I believe that. The sky was the limit. Now, the Fred statue and those types of things certainly won't happen.
The timing of this makes it clear that ISU was a stepping stone for him. I love the guy. Always will. But no one can argue that ISU was a stepping stone for him!! No one. Not with the timing of this. The interview with Orlando makes it even more obvious. That's not to say I don't appreciate what he had done for us. I do. But we were, once again, a stepping stone. Even for our chosen son. Sigh....

Adam Zagoria reported that Hoiberg told him he couldn't commit 100% to being ISU's coach next year.

He then corrected that report and said it was never "explicitly stated".

Either way, Diallo knew Fred couldn't commit and assuming this happened before his surgery it was months ago.

I'm not sure about other fanatics but I grew up watching Fred and following his career. I had his jersey and wore it all the time. Twitter is buzzing tonight and seems like there could be fall out to his legacy with the way this whole offseason has played out. I'm interested on how this will play out to the fans and how this affects the "mayor" status. I guess time heals all wounds but the initial reaction has been about what is expected.

Who?

I don't know why there is so much anger when there are no facts personally from Hoiberg about why he is leaving. Maybe he doesn't like the NCAA. Maybe he doesn't want to be a babysitter of young kids. Maybe he doesn't want to wait for kids to develop or materialize. Maybe he doesn't like slow paced "grind it out" basketball. If we should be mad let's direct it towards McDermott. As fans we may never know what bugs him deep down inside.

I wouldn't take anything from him as a fact at this point. Babysitting adults isn't going to be any better. He doesn't like slow paced grind it out basketball that's why we never played it. Why would anybody be directing any anger at McD right now? Really I definitely need an explanation on that one.

I for one am very unhappy about how things how come about with the possible verbally agreeing even while we still were making a tourney run, then to lose to UAB then to lose him to the NBA. Wont ever think of him the same but still see him as the best Cyclone in our history all in all.
