Others that have been mentioned that would be good to me (although I don't think they are all realistic):
Larry Krystoviak
Tom Crean
Jay Wright
Mike Brey (not gonna happen)
Mark Few (not gonna happen)
Mark Gottfried
Tony Bennett (not gonna happen)

Some mentioned that I don't want any part of:
Josh Pasner
Lorenzo Romar
Richard Pitino
Mike Anderson

Wright, Few and Bennett would be the ones I would pay big bucks to in that list. Brey was a mediocre coach before he had Grant on his team. Not convinced he's any better now.

Why aren't we releasing the name of the mystery candidate who dropped out? There will be too much skepticism for anyone to take it seriously outside the people on this board. Clearly no other national reporter is going to release it, throw us a bone here, there is limited risk to releasing it on here now.

Crean please god no. That would be an awful choice. Similarly with Mike Brey. I think he is definitely a good coach, but I don't think he would fit in here.

I think a combination of money (self-imposed budget rather than capable budget) and very few high-level candidates combine to create a lot of hypotheticals. There is a single candidate that I've heard is still interested and would meet the criteria of being able to command top-dollar, but I still think events will transpire to prevent it from becoming reality.

Once a hire is made, will you be able to share some of this information?

I'd love an article or blog post with some of the information you heard but either couldn't 100% verify or just couldn't share at the time. Not sure even after the hire if you'd be willing to put that stuff out there though.

As much as I can, I will.

I'd guess his mystery candidate that we'd be willing to pay top dollar is Greg Marshall. And no, I am not kidding.

I bet he was a little interested but nothing will come of it.

I'm guessing that the main reason Jeremy and CW were given ANY extra information at all was with the stipulation of anonymity. There are only a few sources who would, or could, know a lot of the names, and if even the names are released it could ruffle some feathers and lead to less information for Jer and CW in the future.

I'm sure they are dying to tell us though!

He just signed a 3 million a year contract 2 months ago.

Why would anyone want Bennett considering next year is our top team ever and he would ruin it with his snoozefest style of play? He would be a horrible hire.

Andy Enfield? Although he Probly wouldn't command over 2.75 million. I don't really want him but he might want to leave USC.

I do agree that his style is not what we've come to love here, but the job that he's done at UVA is pretty impressive. He's one of very few defensive-minded coaches that I'd like to have here.

Prior to this newfound offensive explosion from Brey's ND team, I would have disagreed with him. He's really put the complete package together over there and would be an outstanding hire.
I don't know if he's realistic or not, but it would be a lot of fun.

If it's an experienced big-time head coach, Bielein, Brey, or Wright would be amazing. K and Few would be excellent, but those two seem like ones that aren't going anywhere.

I think the newfound offensive explosion is just Brey fitting his system to his personnel. (despite many thinking he just copied Hoiball) His down year was with Grant on academic probation. I don't see him going anywhere because he is such a good fit with the institution. The only reason would be because of how difficult it is to recruit for ND basketball, which lacks much history. How many schools have sat both a starting quarterback and a star point guard for academic reasons?

I'm not buying that there is an actual serious mystery candidate. I seriously doubt that it moved beyond a quick conversation on the candidate's part.

I doubt it got an an actual interview, and if it did, I'm highly suspect that we would actually step up and pay what it would take.

That's not the Iowa State way.

If it's quiet on the news front today about the coaching search some of you may not want to just disregard what Jeremy is saying regarding a "mystery candidate" because it basically is right in line with something I heard this weekend as well from a source I trust. Just like it probably is killing Jeremy not being able to elaborate on it any more than he has same goes here, whenever you get a juicy bit of info from someone that probably shouldn't be telling you what they did you have to respect your source to be vague and as discreet as possible because if you spill the beans you probably won't be getting info from there again. It's funny how people will take some of the complete BS posted here and treat it with more faith than from someone like Jeremy who has proven to have some good connections.

This is a just a person observation: I got a kick out of reading some of these threads over the weekend trying to track planes through Atlanta hoping to uncover that there were more interviews than being reported. Have to tip your hat to Pollard for holding interviews in a city where there is enough flight traffic you could probably sneak someone in and no one would know. I don't think the mystery candidate interviewed this weekend though. I think if they feel underwhelmed by the interviews done over the weekend they will get into more talks with this mystery candidate (there could be 2 of them possibly) because this is where the money factor will play a bigger role than it would with the 4 or 5 we know of from this weekend. For as much as the media tried to villainize Leath on his involvement in the process if he really is the one that is wanting to keep the salary figure from being a constraint on who we talk to then I am glad he got involved to push Pollard to broaden the search.
