It is also important to get the opinion of the guy in charge before you make a hire like this. The brand of ISU basketball can be huge, Leath knows this. He just wanted to be sure JP picked the correct guy for the job. These searches are not easy and it never hurts to get a 2nd opinion on a guy. I think it is a good think that Leath got involved and knows how important athletics are to the University.

Then why doesn't anyone else do it? Leath commented that it's "Probably" out of the ordinary for him to be involved in the manner he was with the coaching search. Whatever, I'm done with this, it's circle the wagons time I get it. Go President Leath...hooray...Even Bubu is on board the Leath Train right now.

I guess TJs last stand at the Alamo ends with a whimper, not a bang.

You don't get it at all. It isn't about circling the wagons. You are jsb level meltdown right now over TJ not being hired.

Of course, at the time both Chizik and Rhoads were considered "home run" hires.

Not really. Chizik maybe..as he was a young up and coming DC from Texas. CPR wasn't so much. He was considered a good hire at the time because he was one of the few who actually wanted to be at IsU and that is rare for fball.

on the one hand I'd like to almost give CPR a couple more years as along as his current staff remains in tact. We have just gotten to the point of having respectable facilities and now a fairly new stadium and I'd like to see how this staff can recruit to that for Two more years. I do think this is one of if not his best staff since he's been here. One thing I'll say about CPR and his team's is that we are far more competitive than we've ever been even though it doesn't show in the win/loss column. Outside a few complete blow outs, we've been pretty close in a lot of games. Whereas under Dmac we would get absolutely destroyed a lot.

JP will be the man when it comes to what the assistants will be paid. Prohm will run the assistants by JP and then they will talk about the expected compensation is to be. But JP is not going to just blindly open his wallet. Prohm has a $7.5 million contract over 5 years. Some people were throwing out silly numbers like $2 million plus should be the salary for the pool of mid-major coaches we had interviewing.

Otzelberger gets paid $230,000 whether he is an assistant or not.

Usually the Head Coach get told by the AD how much in total he has to spend on staff. It is then up to the head coach to select the staff and set their pay by allocating it from the total ok'd by the AD.

As far as Leath. I really hope he is involved in the next fball coaching search. Like others have said, I don't trust JP to make another fball hire. We should be damn glad we have a president that gives a crap about Athletics. I was around in the early 80's amd there were very high level discussions within the university to consider just dropping athletics all together...the AD at the time was a black hole on revenue and the deans and president were sick of paying for an empty stadium and empty Hilton

I concur with Beyerball Johnson.

Sorry. Sometimes Blazing Saddles references just randomly fall out of me.

I tend to agree with this, as long as he still has the respect and attention of the team. Given the player attrition and some of the on-field performances last year, it certainly appeared that he may have lost the team. If that's the case, then its no use keeping him.

@TravisHines21: Virginia Tech's Isaac Chew and Murray State's William Small are two names I hear consistently as potential candidates for Prohm's staff.

@TravisHines21: But I don't think there will be much if any official movement until next week.

Those two plus Otz will be fantastic. If Hines is throwing those two names out there the rest should be just a formality and will probable be announced Monday or Tuesday

Prior to, Chew was a valuable entity with the Ohio Valley Conference Champions in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons at Murray State. His 2007 through 2011 stint in Kentucky included an unprecedented 31-win season, second round berth in the NCAA tournament, NIT appearance and cultivation of guard Isaiah Canaan, now playing for the Houston Rockets.
Coach Chew served as an assistant coach at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa for the 2006-2007 season. The team advanced to the NJCAA National tournament for the first time in five years, and finished the regular season as the undefeated regional champs.

Make it so.

I don't get the hate on Leath. Pollard was set to hire his undeserving friend with no search process. Leath told him to do a search. Pollard did a search which included Otz, and it turned out that Otz wasn't the best choice available.

I think it's great the President told the AD to do his job and not half *** it.

Link? I think that is just speculation as I've seen no proof. That said, I don't mind Leath's involvement either.
