Where they love the governor
Seems accurate from my experiences. Note: I grew up in the town next to Clinton and spent a lot of time in Maquoketa.

Oh like Low Moor is so much better than Clinton! Rabble rabble rabble...

On a serious note, as I've posted before in other similar threads, some folks need to get out of the state more. Texas panhandle - yikes.

When I went through the Texas pandhandle I found it pretty Midwestern, honestly.

Houston I didn't care for, and Waco was an unmitigated **** hole.

I think I have seen more accidents, crime and crappy weather in 1 week in Houston than you would ever see any in Iowa town for the year......You should drive around some of the towns in the south. Go road tripping around bama or Arkansas. Some weird stuff down there. like just head scratching. stuff that would make you say wow...I am glad I live in Ottumwa Iowa.

I do think that Roundball struck on at least one of the answers. The rural areas in southern Iowa have much worse farmland and don't bring in the income that many places in northern Iowa produce. If they didn't happen to land another larger employer then they have really struggled. Any measure that uses "doesn't have much to do" is way to subjective and shouldn't be incorporated in this type of survey.

Lol, Low Moor is pretty bad (have relatives that live there). I grew up in Camanche.

And now you have me hungry for burgers.

I don't know if Wadena is any more of a dump than any small town. I've been through much worse in the southern couple tiers of counties. I can't think of many "on the map" towns in northern Iowa that are on par with southern Iowa/northern Missouri in terms of dilapidation.

I get it; everyone makes fun of the people that live south of them. Arkansas makes fun of Louisiana, Missouri makes fun of Arkansas, Iowa makes fun of Missouri, Northern Iowa makes fun of Southern Iowa, and Minnesota makes fun of Iowa. Those of you from northern Iowa feeling superior to southern Iowa are on the same level as all those Minnesotans who constantly have to tell you how much better their state is.

If it makes you feel any better DSM metro people look down on both North, South, East, and West.

Minnesota is better than Iowa (and it's not even close), and I say that as someone who was born, raised, and educated in Iowa.

I just moved from Iowa to Minnesota for work and Ill I've got to say is grass is always greener on the other side. There are plenty of things about Iowa that I miss since moving here.

99% of you on here are going based on what you've heard - not what you actually know.

marshalltown has a ton of problems, yes, but also a better sense of community than any other Iowa town I've been in. whoever said "money" made a town good was spot on. I would venture than marshalltown is no worse than the east side of des moines. The difference is all the rich white people moved to a separate legal entity (west des moines or ankeny) leaving only the poor to remain. it's not really a "fair fight" when multiple jurisdictions are not considered to be as "one city" for the purposes of lists like these. imagine if des moines annexed all that land instead of new suburban towns being created - so jordan creek would be in des moines proper. What would you think then?

There are plenty of things I dislike about marshalltoen and plenty of things I like - just like everyone else wherever they choose to live. are you suggesting those people are trash or bad people? how can you claim a town is bad without insulting all those that choose to live there.

IMO, Marshalltown is a ******** and I say this as a current Marshalltown resident. Almost every single upside you can find about Marshalltown, you can find in any town of similar size. It's just that most of the others don't have the large amount of poopyness that outweighs it so much. I've lived in probably 12 or 13 different areas (not just moves from suburb to suburb in the same city) over the last 25 years and Marshalltown only comes in ahead of Streator,IL and Marseilles,IL at the bottom of the list. And I'd put those two places up against almost anywhere in the country as the anus of America.

I can tell you're one of those hillbillys from Southern Iowa.
