Time for everyone to e-mail Pollard and have this fixed.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

I think Fred didn't want to be the bad guy and leaked this out.
I think it's totally true about JP not wanting to spend extra money.
I think the JP being jealous of Fred is false.
I think Fred going to the NBA was an inevitability and this isn't what pushed him out the door. But those in Fred's camp want fans to think it is.
I will quote you in my article. Sound good? I won't give up your name though. :jimlad:

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

iirc Jaime does indeed spend all of the money the Athletic Department makes. Were he to increase spending on the bball program it would take money from somewhere else. Who's to say his decisions were out of line?
This. According to the EADA reports, ISU spends what it takes in. If MBB wants more, somebody else takes a cut.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

"nearly double-digit sources"
this really bugged me. Why not say "nine sources". Otherwise good work out if Hines exposing JP. Pretty effed up that he and other AD families flew for free to San Antonio but the actual BB staff's family didnt? Wtf.

I laughed at that too. Why not just say numerous sources? He talked to 8 people for an article, where does he find the time.

I think that this is one of many things missing from the story. If you're going to trash a man's reputation based on these "facts", then follow up with some comparisons to programs in our budget range.

There's nothing missing. A little critical reading is all it takes. These kids and coaches, with the B12 teams and Iowa, UNI, and Drake talk all of the time. If this was the norm, no one would have said anything to Hines about it.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

JP and Fred got along fine. Look at Fred's last "favorite" on twitter...

It was from Jamie. Did they have their disagreements? Yeah, who doesn't. But he isn't the reason Fred left.

It's a bush league article from Hines citing "sources" HE DIDN'T NAME ONE SOURCE. Anyone could have wrote that article.

This is outstanding work by you. Obviously not "anyone"..

I think this means Travis got another job and has been sitting on this story until it didn't matter.

I think this is the perfect time. The "fire Paul Rhoads bandwagon" is probably at an all time high. Who do we want performing the next coaching search?

Except that numerous people here are stating donors are willing to spend more for a good product.

Unfortunately, having been a fan of ISU since 1970, this just seems so typical of ISU.......a school on the verge of possibly (maybe even likely) the best MBB season it has ever had......and an article like this comes out. It seems ISU fans just cannot have nice things.

So confused. Do we have a good guy? Is it Leath? JP? Hines? Is he in Chicago? Is it all part of a complicated Branstad/Rastetter/BOR/AIB Iowa City plot to destroy Iowa State?

I haven't read the whole thread so this is likely a duplicate post from somebody else...but, I can only imagine the damage control being worked on by the Athletic department now. How many questions will Pollard be asked about this over the coming weeks/months?

Just WOW!

You don't think that the article would be better received if he shows the comparisons? For example, he writes the facts about the hotel room, but leaves out the details of when the flight was. Then maybe say, at other Power 5 conferences this happens most of the time. Or at other Power 5 conferences it is well known that the school pays for the extra day.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

There was a post in a long-ago thread about program spending in the conference. My recollection is we saw giant increase in revenues through the several+ years but did NOT see a commensurate increase in program spending. We HAVE to spend some money and I would hope JP would err on spending a little MORE than he was comfortable spending rather than less...

Most of which has been spent on providing the facilities the coaches say they needed to compete in the Big 12, and debt service for the same. More has been spent on head/assistant coaches as a percentage of total budgets than years past, as well, I would guess.

I think if ISU could get the money, JP would happily spend it. Here no different than any other AD in that respect. And he has done a good job of increasing donations since he's been here, much better than either of the previous two in that regard.

It seems Fred was accustomed to the NBA way of doing things and found his way back to it. This is what we had been saying almost since Fred got here, and the story doesn't change any of that.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Just read the article. Makes me wonder if Hines is leaving Ames Tribune. He can't be on good terms with Pollard now.

Very interesting details.

It's probably not as bad as the article seems but it also probably means there actually was an issue. Hines wouldn't have dropped something like this on our fan base just to get clicks.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Those that think this is Fred's doing, maybe think more along the lines of ****** donors wanting to make sure JP isn't running solo on the next FB coaching search by being vocal about how cheap JP is. They want Leath to have a very big role in the search like he was for MBB to force JP not to go too low. They want to donate to a winning program, not just find ways to stay at D2 level spending on coaches.

If anything, this article makes the story re: Pollard wanting to go cheap and hire Otzelberger until Leath came in and made him run a real search more plausible. I didn't believe it before but now I'm not sure.

You don't know that and is a reckless assumption on your part.
