where do you feel (if paul was fired) that ISU resides in the pecking order of current and forseen openings at the end of the yr?

these are the ones I know of and the ones I think could happen

Illinois, Maryland, Purdue, Usc east, USC, Miami FL, arkansas, north texas, houston (assuming herman leaves), VaTech (retire), Virginia, UCF, Memphis (fuente leaves), rutgers, New Mex St, and I know there are others but cant think of anymore likely ones.

Some of those are obvious. Both USCs, Miami, VaTech and Arkansas are clearly above us. Maryland probably is too in large part because they are basically in a position to be Oregon East. We're clearly above Rutgers with their AD situation, and clearly above North Texas and the like. Then it gets dodgy. Do you want to coach in the Big 12 or are you just as happy in the AAC? Are you a Big 10 guy like a Narduzzi of last year? How much risk are you willing to take? If you don't want much risk and aren't in the discussion for prime gigs, Houston is for you and ISU is not. We are a place for a post-Michigan Rich Rodriguez type. He's done the big time gig, still wants a big timish gig but doesn't necessarily want the pressure of the top 10 or so jobs.

I think it will be a struggle for us to get a Fuentes or Herman type here because of one thing: It's a lot of risk to a guy who is already floating at the top of big time lists with potential openings in the near future, if not this year (Miami, USCs, Texas, etc.). If that's what they want, it's not happening. Now, say they want their own deal, maybe, but I doubt it. I think, at the end of the day, we are looking at a Matt Campbell or PJ Fleck type. It's someone from a lower level or a coordinator who isn't out there for the prime jobs but is out there for a head BCS job. At the end of the day we are still attractive for those guys with our facilities and fanbase. If JP can sell the fact that ISU, with a little success is a sleeping giant (seriously, think about how rapid the fanbase will expand over the next 5-10 years with the enrollment boom) those guys should look at this job as a good option in the 5 year window. Maybe it's not in the two year window, but 5, yes. I'm not going to get into coordinators because there are so many out there but we should also be a good option for a lot of them if being a head coach is a goal.

Just my opinion...

USC
SCar
Ark
VaTech / Miami
ISU/Ill/MD/Purdue
Rutgers
Houston
NMST/NTex

Hard to disagree with this, but maybe Houston should be a little higher since it's proven to be a nice springboard for head coaches. Two of their last three coaches are leading top-10 teams right now.

Vatech

under armour .... i mean maryland
Ill / virginia major market recrutiing with recent sucess
ISU / Purdue / rutgers to me are similar. Purdue has the tiller history to show winning is possible. Rutgers has NYC recruiting. ISU has better fan support and newer facilities than both.
Houston / Memphis could be better spot than the above only for the fact its easier to win there and then easier to move to a bigger school
UCF

North Texas

I would switch miami and SCar. Now that Miami is done with sanctions they are more attractive especially since they have enough high school talent right in Miami to make them good.

I'm sorry, but I'd put ISU squarely at the bottom. There are probably FCS level coaches who would laugh at this job. Hate to say it but it's true.

Way up there
It's sad to say but we're more in the Houston/UCF type of group than any of the p5 teams. At the very least, we'll be looking at similar candidates. I'd have Arkansas 2nd on that list, they have great in state recruiting and are the only p5 team in their state. When you look back at their hires, they get big names. They get overshadowed by the other big programs in their division but they are a big time program, even without the success the other programs have had.

Really??? From an easy of recruiting I would agree with Houston, but we are in the Big 12 and Houston is in AAC or whatever they call it now....

Purdue and Maryland has a little more tradition than us, but are not in any better state than us. I think we are on the same level.....

I was originally going to put ISU in front of NM and NT as well. Then I thought, if I was a coach with offers from all three schools, as long as I'm going somewhere it's impossible to win, I'll take less money to do it someplace warm.

I'd agree with this. Yes, we are in the Big 12 but we are in the bottom 2 teams by a large margin. As a coach, would you rather struggle in a P5 or go to a non-P5 where you can have quicker success? I'd go non-P5 route.

The only thing that we really have going for us is facilities but with today's TV contracts, that advantage is narrowing with non-P5.

Testifying
Right now, I'd say ISU is the bottom of the P5 schools, minus Kansas. 5 years ago, I'd say ISU was a better job than Wazzu, Duke, Colorado, Syracuse, Rutgers, and Wake Forest.

There's some underlying reasoning there as to why those coaches are different than you.

I would imagine roughly the same level as Purdue although I would personally rather coach at Purdue. The schedule year after year would be more favorable, plus I couldn't tolerate working for Jamie Pollard.
