He doesn't want his starting QB to be shown up by backup. There is no other reason not to give Lanning a shot when your starter cannot come within 5 yards of hitting Wrs.

QB was not our worst position today. I would complain about the DBs and RBs first.

Nope. It was definitely QB. During the period where we were tied 21-21 and down 24-21, there were several drives that died because Sam couldn't hit wide open receivers. If we keep those drives going and score some points during that period, I think the defense continues to play better than they ended up playing in the second half.

The RBs can't get yards when they are constantly being met at, or behind the line of scrimmage. The RBs is on the O-line today. The DBs are bad in coverage, but also not getting any pressure on Boykin. No DB can cover a guy for several seconds. You have to get pressure or there will be open WRs after a little bit of time.

Both lines were outplayed tonight.

Can someone explain to me why we went away from the QB rotation that seemed to work great in the first quarter? And when Sam started samming it up again, where was the faith when down 10 to let Joel show what he has?
This coaching staff boggles my mind.

Agreed. Makes zero sense. What does make sense is that we didnt score 1 more point once Sam took every snap. He never has, never will continue to make good decisions all game long. Period. Not all his fault, but when he is playing nothing works.

How bad our our defensive backs?! O my lord. They have zero ball skills. Looks like a bunch of 7th graders trying to defend a pass against older brother.

It is criminal that Lanning isn't starting at this point. That throw was a 25 yard back shoulder throw. That tells me Lanning is mentally and physically ready when he reads the coverage and puts the ball the one place the defender can't get it.

Lanning's throw to Lazard was textbook. Which makes sense why our staff didn't let him back in the game.

This is a big 10 or 1990's mentality. If you are going to win in our league, you have to think offense first. No one...no one....no one...stops teams like Baylor and TCU. Your only hope is to be efficient on offense and try to force timely turnovers. Every good team in our league is built around a talented QB, that position should be our biggest concern week in, week out. Our coaching staff has settled for mediocrity at QB, we are seeing the results.

Good post. The best defense against these teams is to keep scoring TD's. That's where the real "pressure" comes from because they aren't scared of any defense. If you keep applying pressure on the scoreboard that is when it makes their coaches question and adjust and the players don't know what is happening because they aren't used to adjusting and then they make mistakes.

Very few QBs would be above average in CPR's program.

We need greatness from that position to overcome the systemic failure around it. Could a guy like Wallace get us to 4 or 5 wins? Probably, but wasting a talent like that in this program would be even more disappointing.

RB's? No.
DB's? Yes.
Our DB's rarely turn their head and find the ball, probably because they are always trying to catch up to the WR. Too often they are either out of position or getting burnt. I think I saw 1 of our DB's turn their head and make a play on the ball (Tribune) and it was incomplete. Imagine that.

Warren's blocking is pretty bad, and that fumble was huge.He is a young and talented, but we saw how much of his recent success was due to our OL going against some bad DLines.

I am not a blindfolded defender of SBR. I saw one good thing yesterday from him - a willingness to throw deep. We had some great plays and Lanning was a part of that. TCU moved their guys into the box (like everyone) daring us to throw deep. We finally did it. We had a couple referee takeaways and 1 or 2 drops and no interceptions, so I wouldn't say it was another TTU day for Sam. This year, he almost never rolls out, and he doesn't run any keepers. Maybe he thinks he is too "valuable" to get hurt. That is a remaining Sam issue, as well as his inaccuracy on wide open receivers. It is ironic that SBR will be in our record books, because he will surely have the record for most losses as a starter. I was out of line on the RBs. They had a fumble, a slip, a couple missed cuts. Not bad - just nowhere to run.

The question came up many times on the Cyclone Reaction show. The hosts stated that when Rhoads was asked in the press conference why Lanning didn't play more, he said something like "that will be part of our Sunday review coaching discussions"

Jack Whitver interpreted that to mean Mangino was making all the QB playing time decisions.

Is there a podcast or an online source for the Cyclone Reaction show?

I'm not saying RB play was great yesterday, but it definitely wasn't our main concern. RB's had very little room to run. That fumble was huge though. Although, pitched slightly behind him, he still should have caught it.
