Then why was MM hired to begin with? I would assume Paul made the decision to hire him?

Mangino was hired because CPR and the football program needed a splash. Something to keep fans interested and hopeful for big things on offense in the future.

Not too many people would have been very happy with CPR promoting yet another assistant to OC.

How would you have handled this situation if you were in CPR's shoes?

Gone to the rest of the coaches and told them to contact the players they are responsible for immediately. With today's communication it would have taken about 10 minutes for 10 coaches to contact 8 players each but I would still have not started the PC until it was done.

This isn't brain surgery, folks. Bungled.

What a mess. I was never on the Mangino train. I said it from the start--he has no business being part of our program. He's not a leader of young men.

I don't know if things will improve. They might. But I'm thinking this is too little, too late for CPR.

The simple truth is this was an abrupt departure. There's no room for criticism of how it was handled, or if the decision was right/wrong. This was not a calculated move by Rhoads. And it does not sound like Mangino really allowed it to be a decision for Rhoads. The ***** hit the fan this morning, unawares, unexpected by anyone. A moment of change was forced upon this football program. Stuff happens, you march on.

As armchair coaches and Cyclone fanatics, realizing the likelihood that Rhoads is a lame duck coach, at least we can now look forward to each Saturday the remainder of the season knowing we'll at least see new faces and new approaches that just might keep our butts in the seats and eyes on the television.

CPR hired Mangino in order to have inside info on KU. Wanted to make sure in his last year that we would not finish at the bottom. MM's days were numbered.

I think this shows how dysfunctional Rhoads has been on the offensive side of the ball. Same thing happened to Herman too if I remember, the two didn't get along.
I think this shows just the opposite. Rhoads has always been a run first guy with a "use the pass to open the run" philosophy. What if Sturdy was calling the plays in the second half against Baylor? Still think this was a bad move?

Ideally it would have been best to tell them first, but the logistics of making that happen without this blowing up are really tough, IMO.

Who cares if it blows up? Of course it would, just like it is right now. Doing it the way he did it did not end speculation, just fueled it (was Mangino fired, or did he quit? Was it because of Lanning or not? Did Mangino show up late for meetings? etc. etc.)

Who cares if the text/email got forwarded? You are going to be asked about it in the press conference anyway so any interpretations can be explained there. In fact, I think it would have been a benefit for all involved, from reporters to CPR answering questions, for the media to have known about this prior to the press conference.

This stuff really isn't that hard, yet coaches seem to screw up the media relations aspect of their job all the time

Dude we don't have that doctor and lawyer money in the ISU AD to be all fancy. Saving money by sticking with an old cell phone plan that has 250 messages per month, a group text to 100+ players would be all kinds of extra charges this month. #Fiscalresponsibility

#CheapskateAD

My guess is there is a phone tree. CPR calls 6 other coaches. Each of them calls 6 players. Each of them calls 6 more players. Etc.

Who cares. In this dumpster fire the addition of a new sack of garbage from the Chinese restaurant isn't going to make any difference.

Re: Mangino Out as OC

Mark wanted two yard bubble screens and Paul wanted the one yard smash up the middle to run the clock.
I hated both plays this year.

Against Iowa in the 3rd quarter:

1st down> run up the middle for no gain
2nd down> bubble screen for 2 yd gaim
3rd down > 3 and 8 and incomplete pass
4th down > punt

4-5 straight possessions in the 3rd qtr for an aggregate 23 yds of total offense

Im still struggling to see why people think this is a big deal? Who cares that he told the media first?

So, was this a last ditch effort to hopefully make the offensive more productive or to make another year of CPR more palatable? One reason gives me hope and the other reason makes me want to cry.

We can agree to disagree.

I just don't think it was a big deal to do it this way, and the way it went down this morning didn't leave us with a ton of options. I think people are looking for every excuse out there to be mad at CPR and he can do no right in anyone's eyes. Not that I blame them, that is just the way it is on this board right now.

Our strength this year and last year was supposed to be the offense. Mangino came in and we all praised the move. Rhoads said it was Mark's offense. Last year the offense was horrid. This year it's been average, and the change at QB was delayed far too long. Rhoads stepped in and told Mangino, as we all have been saying for weeks, that this is Lannings team now. Mangino feels like he can't run his offense effectively with Lanning, and told Rhoads that Sam's the starter as long as he's the OC. Rhoads said don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya. We'd all be complaining about Sam starting if Rhoads didn't take a stand. Now you're all complaining that he took a stand. Let's see how the change works, then decide.

this. I could be wrong, but I just don't see it being a big deal. I don't think the players will give less effort on Saturday because of coach telling the media before them.

so now we've at least advanced past the silly argument that it wasn't feasible to tell the players first. As to your question, I would guess that the players care.

Exactly, people over estimate players reactions. In fact I think the players will appreciate being told when, why, and how it all played out in person with detailed explanations even if it is after CPR told the media vs. getting a text/call saying "Mangino is no longer with us" before the press conference.
