Of course, you would call those 5 guys and you would offer them big money. But in the end, I'm guessing those 5 guys will laugh in your face and say I'm either staying where I am (and making good money) or I'll hold out for a much better job.
Again, the reality is that we are likely looking at a low level coordinator or a Power 5 position coach. Or maybe an FCS head coach.
But it is fun to dream.
Uh, yeah. They can use it when they cross over into Minnesota on recruiting trips too.
He's also making <$400K/year, with a $320K buyout. Very easy to manage and easy to entice him to ISU. I am NOT endorsing him, but his current contract and salary are NO obstacle at all.
Reason number 1. He also likes Navy, basically said it will take a giant offer to get him to think about leaving and will get better offers if he wants to leave.
Don't know anything about the Navy guy at all. One thing I will say though, is he is used to dealing with self-motivated players. May not work with "talented" guys as well. Could be a replay of the McDermott movie in that aspect.
My first "insight" would be: get a guy who has been successful as a head coach somewhere. They have proved something. Not all the winners at small schools will be winners at big schools, its no sure thing. But to me that is a better chance than someone who was a coordinator and has not been a head coach. Plus after Chizek and Rhoads, I have coordinator fatigue right now.
My other "insight" would be get someone "SMART". I really liked Rhoads & Mac both, and they knew football, but neither struck me as a super genius. Briles, Saban, Meyer - they are not just FB coaches, they strike me as guys who are quite intelligent and would be successful in any profession. JP, follow the old rule for hiring - hire people smarter than you and they will make you look good.

Matt Wells from Utah State could be interesting. His brother Luke was on Rhoads' staff here for a while.
He is in his third year as HC and has gone 9-5, 10-4, and now 6-5. Of course you'd prefer a guy with more of an upward trajectory but I don't know enough about USU football to know why they are on a bit of a downswing.

CW just tweeted a bit ago that he heard a few months back that Scott Frost would have interest in the job. Said the source wasnt very stable tho

I would honestly be happy with a hire like Scott Frost, even if he was here for 2-3 years before going to Nebraska, if that meant that he stocked the cupboard with talent and went 8-5 or something in his last season. Hopefully that could springboard us to the next hire.
Football is not basketball. Players aren't going to transfer out en masse because of a coaching switch.
The problem is a lot of triple option football isn't power, it's finesse. You are essentially doing the same things and challenging defenses in the same way. Defending an option attack has a lot to do with eye discipline and I just believe that B12 defenses have to have that the way it is. The military academies run these systems because they have a lot of 280-290 lb linemen due to other military standards so they can't just line up and run it down your throat.
Running the triple option then is like running the spread now...everyone was doing it.
Could someone look up what we gave Rhoads when hired compared to average salary at the time??

I am really hoping for a HC with a complete staff. That said, unless our normal process is changed and we are willing to pay into the top half of the Conference that is a long shot.
According to this chart, Virginia is coached by a 5yo who makes $2.4M/yr. I'm pretty sure I was eating paste at 5yo.
