Pat Fitzgerald was nearly let go by Northwestern last year after a couple years of stumbles. Northwestern is an even harder place to recruit to than Ames. Runs a style that fits with what we ran toward the end of this season. Enthusiastic coach with credibility, could bring his entire staff and hit ground running. Only earning $2.25 million.

That would be worth a look, if I were in JP's shoes. But you'd have to pry him from his alma mater, which would take some $$$$.

More $$$ than I thought, Fitzgerald is signed through 2020. And it appears that Northwestern structured his buyout as a loan in 2011, meaning they gave him $2.5 million and said you don't need to pay it back as long as you remain our coach. If he leaves, he owes NU that money. I thought that was an interesting way to do the buyout.

I don't think it will happen. But I love the sentiment. Let's go after some guys that the David Ubben types think we can't get and put a pitch together along with a $3 mil/year contract. Try to Johnny Orr somebody.

Of course, you would call those 5 guys and you would offer them big money. But in the end, I'm guessing those 5 guys will laugh in your face and say I'm either staying where I am (and making good money) or I'll hold out for a much better job.

Again, the reality is that we are likely looking at a low level coordinator or a Power 5 position coach. Or maybe an FCS head coach.

But it is fun to dream.

if you mean coordinator, yes. If you actually meant position coach, you're an idiot.

Judging by the knowledge we have of your panic over how the Hoiberg situation went down, unfortunately we probably have to lean toward the latter.

The problem is a lot of triple option football isn't power, it's finesse. You are essentially doing the same things and challenging defenses in the same way. Defending an option attack has a lot to do with eye discipline and I just believe that B12 defenses have to have that the way it is. The military academies run these systems because they have a lot of 280-290 lb linemen due to other military standards so they can't just line up and run it down your throat.

The bigger plus is that he is a subject matter expert in the offense. That is critical no matter what we run.

The spread was not optimal to choose back in the winter of 2008/09, but it would have been a lot better, likely sufficient, had Rhoads had enough expertise in it to hire a staff that was deft in teaching and recruiting (identifying) to it. Instead Rhoads was confused and indecisive on how to make his chosen offense work here, particularly after Herman left.

ISU really, really needs to do exactly what Iowa is doing, only better. Go under center, get a fullback, run out of the I, and then be willing the throw out of it too. Use your TEs to make LBers play pass defense, go into the shotgun and spread when you need to pass, but try to grind it out for the most part. Iowa is no more talented offensively than ISU, except maybe at QB. They are just way better coached.
