I think people need to realize if ISU goes after a young "up and coming" coach, they're going to get Chiz'd again. ISU is not a destination coaching position. If things are able to get turned around, the coach will use it as a springboard on to the next job. So if you're someone like Matt Campbell (just throwing a name out), why would you waste 3-5 years of coaching at ISU just so you can make a jump to the next team?

Your post kind of contradicts itself. You start by saying a good young coach will use us as a springboard, but the end of your post says why would someone waste 3-5 years here. I am confused.

Also, throw me in the camp of being perfectly fine with being used as a stepping stone. Freddy did it and we are better for it.

Got be the stepping stone before you can be the island.

I'll clarify my thoughts. I'm fine with a young gun but it just needs to be noted that ISU will have to pay a hefty premium with the amount of jobs that are open. If it doesn't work out they will be left with two buyouts on their hands, which is true if any coach doesn't work out.

Exactly. Since people are discussing Les Miles, him using OSU as a stepping stone hasn't hurt them one bit.

Look what Fred using ISU as a stepping stone has done to the basketball program.

Forgot to add that Cincy has been used as a stepping stone for their previous 3-4 coaches and it seems to be working for them as well.
That's a good point. I think generally speaking, coaching turnover has a negative impact on a program which is trying to build itself up. I don't recall Cincy being terrible before they started establishing themselves. I think coaching turnover is one thing that hurt Rhoads the most during his tenure.

The more and more I look at it, the more I think it will be Matt Campbell. Would mirror the Prohm hire in alot of ways. Young Coach with a lot of Mid Major success, would allow us to retain Ayeni and keep guys on board-like (a la' Otz) and keep some momentum building. (Although not as much as the Bball program obviously) It also probably fits the price range Leathermans and JP want to pay. We are all told then and are being told now that we are going to see them pony up, but end all be all price is still going to mean alot. TS has also been saying he thinks Campbell would take the job.

Here nor there
Miles seems out of reach, and wouldn't be one my top choices anyways. I think there are better "fits", like Moglia, Stitt, even the Buffalo guy. I do think it would be a positive sign of Leath's ambition for ISU.

If I was Pollard I would want to at least get an interview with him, just to get his take on the opening even if there wasn't a lot of mutual interest. He just has such a different point of view than most college coaches.

I think this needs to go one of two ways and each one brings in a guy with a chip on his shoulder. We bring in a young gun whos got his eyes set at the top of the mountain or we bring in the Vetran who's been overlooked who will take this as his one shot to prove he's got what it takes to be at this level. There are names on this list that fill those scenarios.

The young guy won't acknowledge the difficulties and will power through them
The old guy will know the challenges and understand how to overcome them

What are people's thoughts on Del Miller - OC/QB coach from KSU?

http://www.kstatesports.com/sport/m-footbl/2015/roster/5589bf91e4b09d6fde8f389c

Marengo, Iowa native, Central College grad, coached at Plainfield and Eagle Grove High schools in Iowa before going to the college ranks. Coached under Hayden Fry/Bill Snyder for a lot of years. Coached Ryan Lindley, Kevin O'Connell, El Roberson, Colin Klein, and Jake Waters - would be a good fit for Lanning.

His age works against him, IMO, but he may be someone to look at.

I think we need to go after Norvell, Brewster or Harbaugh.

Seriously? Harbaugh? U are kidding right? Norvell would be a horrible choice. Texas offense has been awful. I don't even think Brewster is coaching.

I'll say it again, give me a few years of success under a coach that's going to use ISU to get a bigger job. A few years of success would be awesome.

It was already said but I'm going to say it again. Who gives a **** if a guy cums in, uses us as a stepping stone, and moves on? Hopefully that means we get 3-4 good years out of him then he leaves the program in better shape than he found it. It would also show other young up and cummers that ISU is a good place to launch your career. These are all good things for ISU and would certainly elevate us above where we are now.

there's a couple words in here that I can't believe made it past the sensors.

Having a coach use us as a stepping stone is not a problem. The problem is when the next guy comes in and doesn't spring board off of it and keep the improvement moving forward.

I wouldn't be upset if he is hired as the OC if Snyder retires and he is looking. Probably could be a good coaching mentor for some of the other staff.

I agree, that's tough to do, no doubt. I think we have to try though. Yeah the schedule is tough but Rhoads proved that all you have to do is win 5-7 games here and you'll start getting big time offers. With our facilities and fan support, if we can "springboard" a few coaches it wouldn't seem like such a graveyard and hopefully we eventually get one to stick.
