It is equally annoying when people discount the loss of a 3 year starter and the vocal leader as if he was a minor contributor.

The difference being that is real and it has happened and it's done. The stuff you're talking about is just stuff you are talking about. Can't believe people are whining about people not whining about something they have no control over.

I also think depth could be an issue if Prohm doesn't manage the team that well and they wear down over the course of the year. I think Fred was great at that and the guys were always strong despite playing lots of minutes.

On the other hand, it seems like some teams with more depth wear down more over the course of the season some times. Maybe due to harder practices or more youth or something like that.

Not asking people to whine about the loss of Naz. There is a huge difference between accepting the loss of a key player and re-evaluating the expectations of a team based upon that loss. That is not whining in the least. What I cannot stand is the meltdown that will inevitably ensue after the first loss when people become upset because Burton didn't get 14 points and 10 boards in his opener or because Matt and Hallice went 2-11 from 3 point range. Burton is not a proven player at the Big 12 level. He might be great but I think it is unrealistic to have McKay-like expectation for him. Equally concerning is that everyone has anointed Matt as the second coming after two games. Matt's game is improved on the defensive end but his 3 point percentage before the Iowa game (through 7 games) was below 30%. I hope the corner has been turned but I think we need to see a few more games.

Finally, guys I'm honestly not trying to be gloom and doom. I love this squad and players but I think this is a Top 17-25 squad at this point compared to a Top 5-10 squad. And I think we are now clearly below Oklahoma and KU in the Big 12 and battling Baylor and West Virginia for third. As I indicated in my first post....my heart goes out to Naz. I know he wishes he could have ended his career with this group.

But melting down now is OK?

I love Naz but if you think he's a 12-15 spot difference maker then pass the crack pipe.

You finally made some decent points, but I think you're giving the rest of college basketball too much credit.

Obvious, but the key now is whether Thomas can keep up his recent superb play. If so, I don't think the expectations for this team changes that much. 2 of the 3 best games played by SG's so far this season are Thomas's last 2 games.

But, from my point of view.......here is what you are missing.

The Naz of this season, unfortunately, was not the Naz of 2013 to early 2015. He had sustained some injuries in previous seasons which had to be addressed this off-season. For whatever reason, he did not recover as quickly has was hoped, and his game is off. So, when you talk about replacing a starter and all that, you are only thinking of the old Naz who was a great outside shooter. That Naz is not available right now, even if he was still playing. If he kept playing, its likely that Naz would not return this year anyway, and who knows, he may have hurt any future plans he may have for playing.

Injuries suck.....but they are a part of the game. There is absolutely nothing any of us can do about it. There is no point in sitting here worrying about what might happen in the Kansas, UNI, Oklahoma, or whatever game. It's just silly, and really just uninformed speculation.

ISU as some good players on the bench. Matt is having his best season so far, and seems to have turned a corner. Hallice averaged 13 points per game as a freshman at a P5 school....so it's not like he has not played on a big stage before, and he appears to be an excellent shooter, and quite frankly probably the best defensive guard. Unfortunately, we have not seen much of Jordan yet......but that could change.....and if it does, it is not like he was a bench warmer at Juco. He has some skills, especially offensively. With Burton, we have no idea what we may be getting, but it is sure going to be fun to find out.

Again, quit panicking! There is still a lot to look forward to this year. I don't think anyone thought ISU would go through the season undefeated did they? If you did........I don't know what to say.

I have followed Iowa State in basketball/football since 1987 when I was 10 years old. I have never missed a game whether it is in-person, TV or radio. Me having concerns about Kansas, UNI and Oklahoma may be a lot of things....but it is certainly not uninformed speculation.

So you didn't have concerns with these games until Naz was ruled out?

The concern over depth is way overrated, IMO. You just have to manage the foul situation so that McKay and Niang are on the court for the last 5 min of the game.

Our other guys have enough offense to keep us in most games to that point.

So playing in November and December is better then sitting out til January and February? Or was his plan the whole time to get the red shirt

I am guessing they were going to see where it is at and then after 8 games either play on or hang them up for the year. What don't you get about this?

Wow groundbreaking stuff...we might lose to the #2 and #3 team in the nation and we might get upset by UNI. Who saw this coming? Captain Foresight here did.

You can't get a medical redshirt if you're playing in the 2nd half of the season, regardless of how many games you sit out at the beginning of the year, per the NCAA...hence the reason he tried to see if he could play through the pain in November instead of holding out.
