I thought Ashton looked like he should have been playing all year. Looked better as an all around player then Cooke to me. Longer, Better defender.

Don't undervalue Cooke on the defensive side of the ball. When the kid wants to play defensive he is a pretty hard nose defender.

I don't why people keep bringing up Carter. No theories needed, just not ready. As for Ashton, his minutes were more due to Cooke suspension and Nader foul trouble, otherwise he doesn't get 19 minutes but would have gotten some. If it leads to more confidence in playing him, then cool. So, yes, we still have a depth problem -Point guard back-up and front court. Burton hurts us defensively and you never know what spurt of offense you'll get from him. As the KState poster indicated in the other thread, that his observation was that even though he thought we dominated most of that game, we look dead tired many times. Those thinking we don't have a depth problem either enjoy or hope that several fatigued guys can make all the right plays in down-to-the-wire challenging big12 games or just assume we can throw anyone out there and give up runs to get breathers. Pretty sure our bigger lead went down to 7 in the first half when Monte came out a couple minutes. Monte 45 minutes, Tues., 37 yesterday, and now has to come back on 1 day rest for perhaps our biggest game of the year to date.

I don't see your logic in this. He hadn't played any significant minutes this year and if Hines was correct when he said he was getting close to passing up Cooke it's possible it was just either him or Cooke. I feel that if CSP was going to play him even a little bit we would have seen that by now.

My reference of he would get some minutes was about yesterday, because of Cooke's suspension. Just maybe, and that's a maybe, he'll be able to contribute a little more in some situations.

Good lord. Of course we have a depth problem.

With the shot clock going to 30 seconds, I imagine possessions are up 5-6 percent across CB. While that doesn't sound like much, it's a lot when you are expecting your guys to go 32+ every night. That's like adding 2 minutes of playing time onto those numbers.

Preferably you want to have 9-10 guys who you THINK can play, with 7-8 really contributing per game. All year we've been rolling with 6 contributors as Cooke hasn't done **** all year. In a giving game at least one of those 6 stink, meaning we have about 5 guys that are doing much of anything.

We need to A) be more consistent and B) have 7 guys (minimum) that are giving positive contributions each and every game. We've done well against them in previous seasons, but I feel like we will be destroyed by WV if we don't have at least 7 guys we can use. That team is really really good.

Yes, WV is good, physical, run 10 guys at you, make you play faster, etc. I'm going to have nightmares if I start thinking about what Burton will play like against their chaos.

I'm amazed that this is still debatable.

I'm hoping in Prohm's more assertive coaching role, he is able to make some improvements on Cooke, Burton, and now Ashton. I wonder if the hands off the offense approach has left the new guys with the struggles we see.

A coach doesn't feel "comfortable" removing his best players from the game?

So did/does ISU really have a depth problem? There have been the questions about Ashton or even Carter getting more minutes for quite a while from the fan base. Any theories as to why these guys haven't been getting time?
After a Win = No Problem....After a Loss = Problem. Fans are pretty predictable. When back of the rotation guys have good games against bad teams there is always a call for them to get more minutes.

I don't feel ISU has a depth problem, issues arise if games are called close or OT games.
The Clones top 6 are as talented as any in the nation and any coach would be keeping these players in the line up a majority of minutes in order to win. Honestly, other than Kansas and UNC most teams in the top 25 really don't go much further than 7 deep. Just look at SMU top 10 and only 6 scholarship players. #1 OU and even Duke are two other examples. Hopefully Cooke and Ashoton (fingers crossed on Carter but not holding my breath), will gain Prohm's trust moving forward just to give the top 6 a breather.

Ashton's play is huge! Means they have 3 guys they can go to now on the bench. Which is really all they need.

I know most people have given up on Carter to contribute this year, but could he be an option in the 2-3 zone? Especially against West Virginia, we'll just need him to finish lobs and block or foul big men in the 2-3. It just sounds like most of the trouble with him is defensive, however, if he can't rebound yet then that would spell trouble in the zone.

Does having a decent game against K-State really mean he's now a reliable option?

Yes. It shows a lot about the kid that he was able to come in for his first big 12 action on the road at KState and contribute and also play smart basketball. Doesn't mean he is going to play that many minutes every game but he showed that he can be relied on to provide solid minutes.

An option for giving guys a few minutes of rest? Yes. A guy that knows what to do and can hit 3Ps (or at least pull the defense) can be an 8th man.
Are ISU fans gonna be mad if he doesn't see the floor against a real team in Oklahoma and ISU players looked gassed by the end of the game?

Are KU fans gonna be mad if they lose to a fake team in Manhattan for the third straight year?
