I was referencing 3:57 on the video I posted showing Niang making a smart move to the rim and getting the bucket plus the foul.

It worked this time, but I guarantee coach Prohm is over there going no no no....yes. Just admit its not a smart play up 10 with 2 mins left and 25 secs on the shot clock. Say he misses that next time and Kansas hits a 3. They are down 7 with 1:45 left. Not smart but worked out this time. You won't see other teams do that at the end of games. You just won't because it's the wrong play.

If there was actually 3:57 of game time left than it might not of been a bad play, but with 2 mins up 10 it's dumb.

You have an All American who is known for being terrific around the rim with an open path to the basket. That sounds a lot smarter than trying to pass it around the half court line against pressure. Plus you have no idea what Prohm is thinking. Georges was money in the second half again, like usual

First post here although I wander around State of Iowa message boards because I like sports. Anyway, your comment made me wonder about the NCAA tournament for the two schools the last 30 years and by my count, (using ESPN) both Iowa and Iowa State have made it 15 times each with identical 15-15 records. An elite 8 for both schools with a couple of unfortunate first round losses as a 2 or 3 seed for both too.

This isn't a comment about who is supposedly better or anything, just something I was curious about.

Here's hoping they both improve on those records this year.

The play in game against Tenn doesn't really count. Forgot to mention ISU's winning record over Iowa. Also more conference titles.

I forgot about Iowa's elite 8 team in 87 (88?) . So yeah, Iowa doesn't have a better program than ISU over the last 30 years. :twitcy:

If there was an open path yes...there wasn't. There were two defenders and he tried to split them and threw up a half hook shot. I get your a fan of his and all but it was a poor decision. Give the ball to Monte and let him milk the clock. I know Prohm is smart so I know that's what he would have chosen

Fun narrative for you but it's been made clear that it actually does count. NCAA's VP for MBB has said as much. Sorry.

Did you even watch the video I posted? He got past Selden and had Brannen Greene standing near the paint who couldn't stop one of the Hoiberg twins around the rim. You're making something out of nothing

Wooh! Pulling out titles.

If ISU ever has to play into the tournament in Dayton, mock and ridicule anyone that argues otherwise. Iowa had a 1 game playoff to get into the tournament. They didn't make it.

Well then he's an idiot. They made it to the play in game but did not make it into the tournament

Sure they did. It's ok though, your guys just got a huge win, celebrate that.

I just think it's funny. In hindsight good play; probably not what most coaches want at that point in the game.

You are trying too hard. You have no idea what Prohm thought about that play, or anything else having to do with the game of basketball. Givitup.

Every team that makes it into the tournament gets a seed. What was Iowa's seed that year?

Here's what I've got.

"The purpose of referring to those games as the second and third rounds was to sway people to use first round or better yet First Four when referencing the games in Dayton,” Gavitt said. "No one in our membership was fond of ‘play-in' games because of the implication that you had to win those games to make the tournament, which couldn't be further from the truth. People now understand the First Four is the start of the tournament, so it will continue to be branded as such, and the weekend games will now go back to being the first two rounds.”

You can read the whole article here, though it's mainly announcing tourney sites. I'm going to move ahead assuming he's a greater authority than you on this, whether he's an idiot or not.

Is it a smart play if you look at it without context? Probably not. But he recognized KU relaxing (giving up), saw a sizable gap and knew at the least, he would draw a foul. For an average player, it's a bad play. For a 1st-team All-American that thrives in those offensive situations, it was a routine play and what separates him from almost every player in the country.

I can agree with that I guess. You just have to think that if he misses and it goes the other way for a 3, it's a whole new ball game. That's why most coaches would take the air out of it at that point. It's just an unnecessary risk really.
