This was the money quote for me:

"We just have to get a lot stronger. We’re not strong enough. When I say strong enough I’m talking basic things like bench and squat. We’re not very strong. I don’t know if that was a focus in the past, maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t, but where we’re at now, we have to be exponentially better by the time August 3 hits."

You can kill the previous regime for all kinds of fringe things, but not strong at the basics is just damning. We all saw that on the field.

I saw games against Ohio State, Florida, Missouri, Boise State, ISU, Cincinnati, etc while watching Toledo and I never felt our lines were dominated by any of those schools. What they did have was a few freak athletes at some positions that made it difficult to execute and either sustain drives or stop drives. Therefore, I believe your comment is exactly what this staff will try to do.

While I've been thoroughly impressed with CMC and staff one thing that gave me pause at the time he was hired was th fact that last years Iowa state team completely dominated Toledo..dominated. Last years game wasn't even close really and had we had an even Div 2 competent QB in that game we win by 20+.

Maybe it was just an off game for Toledo idk but I remember after that game thinking we just dominated them and lost

One thing to keep in mind and don't get me wrong I'm sure it's a team wide issue but the strongest guys usually on a team are the Oline guys...well we lost Taise, Lalk, Burton and Oni..and those 4 guys were by far the strongest lineman on the team prob..so yea it prob does seem like we aren't that strong up front. Now WTS...there's more to a team than just 4 guys. I read the article and Alex has a lot of interviews on his site...he does a great job with that stuff. I think this program is about to look a whole lot different in a couple years.

Well there really isn't a need for a squat machine when you have racks to squat in

Squat machines aren't as a good squat rack but to accommodate injured players they are way better than nothing. I can't imagine there were many times when 5 treadmills were being used at once anyway.

I wasn't impressed with Toledo that day either. I only saw them that one time so haven't really thought about it.

I don't remember domination. I saw an ISU team that might be better but couldn't get out of it's own way.

But that in itself was pretty telling to me. Figured CPR was coaching his last season because they just played a MAC team and if you took away the jerseys an outsider wouldn't be able to tell that one was a MAC team and was a Big 12 team. They had better athletes at quite a few positions.

Hopefully CMC can upgrade the talent now and develop them better.

Wait--I thought that the lifters here said that the bench press didn't matter?

I actually remember their star WR and other dropping all sorts of passes while being wide open. We actually could have been beat pretty bad if they would have been able to catch the ball

really? You have lifting groups of 20+ guys broke down into subgroups of 3 or 4. You would easily have 5 guys on them at one time. In the old Jacobson weight room it would drive me nuts how back logged certain machines would get (neck machine, lat pull down, dip station, back extension, etc.).

Interview seemed like pretty much any new S&C coach I've ever seen. They will do a few things the same, a lot of things different and they don't really care what was done before. Also, of course, the team will become stronger. Pretty vanilla, really, but it was a good interview and hopefully we can stuff out of him once a year with some more specifics.

You can tell there are a bunch of engineers on this site. Everything is either white or black, right or wrong.

I'm not shocked at all that someone new would come in and have a different philosophy on how to do things, and they all think they have ideas that are better than others.

Keeping in mind that there are several months between the end of the season and NFL Combine, it seems like our guys in the combine had pretty good bench press reps, IIRC. I have a feeling our current guys are somewhere in between where he thinks they are and where one could be after working on the BP for a few months outside of our program.

Maybe so but I think or systemic strength was poor. More power lifting. Everyone wants to get away from it because this or that but if you want to bulk up, bench, squat, and Olympic lifts. Nothing secret pretty much anyone with a background in strength training could tell you that.

This is 100% wrong!

You said it much more politely than I would have.

To the other poster.....Rhoads too involved in S&C? I thought the party line was that he gave Yancy too much decidion making?

The comments on this board never cease to amaze me. The percentage on this board who actually know anything about weight lifting for athletes is probably 10%.

Squat machine? My goodness.

Take it up with our new S&C coach. It's his idea. Stop berating other posters, Hawkfan.

It doesn't by comparison to a long list of other "measurables", but between bench and squat you can get a pretty good idea of a persons overall strength, which is why he used those two examples together to make his point.

LoL you still missed the point. They use squat racks....free weights...not machines. That's why you don't see a machine.

too funny

You're the one who missed the point in regard to injured players and the squat machines.
