just got back from a convention in Vegas, and had a few disasters where we stayed.

First, the time share people were absolutely everywhere and absolutely relentless. We gave up being polite to them after the first day.

Had to change rooms due to no AC (after two calls about it and no repair).

Last night, I was playing slots at about midnight and there was a big pop and the entire casino floor went dark. Luckily I only had about $17 in there because no one came around to let anyone know what to do, so I just gave up after half an hour and went back to my room. No idea what people that had a grand or two in the machines did. They were still out this morning at 11 when we left.

Got back to my room at 1 and fell asleep just in time for the fire alarms to go off for about 45 minutes throughout our tower (only stopping for brief, blaring announcements that there was no fire).

my first time flying, our plane got delayed and instead of getting to Montreal, they so kindly had us stay overnight in Detroit. No, not in one of the nice hotels attached to the airport. They put us in a taxi and drove us somewhere else in Detroit to a hotel whose name I can't remember. Friend and I get into the room and notice various stains everywhere (she was pretty sure one was blood since her own Ames apt had a stain from a stabbing to a prior occupant) and what appeared to be bullet holes.

I went out in the hallway to call my then-fiance and a girl that had ridden with us in the taxi comes out of her room across from ours at about 11pm, dressed and with all her luggage.

I ask, "early flight?"

she goes "no, I think my room has bed bugs."

I still don't think my parents have heard this story. Probably a good idea.

I love Black Jack but cant stand most casinos. We were in a fancy Reno, NV casino and supposedly in the 'Tower'--a separate non-smoking high-rise addition.

Cigarette smoke gets into every nook and cranny, like air, dust, water..... It still smelled, and walking through the heart of the casino to get anywhere? It smells foul, nasty, crappy, sh#tty

There's a reason why I'll never stay at any Travelodge again. Watertown, NY (Ft Drum) supposedly had a 4-star, "award winning" Travelodge.

Shreds of paper all over the floor in the hallway. The rooms looked like they were straight out of the 1950s - and not in the "retro" way. The "breakfast" was those mini boxes of cereal with a jug of milk sitting on the counter. My coworker had blood on his sheets. I'm not usually one for sleeping in my clothing, but that evening I was covered. We got out of there the next morning.

Oxford, MS, Comfort Inn - we found mushrooms growing on the carpet near the AC units.

Generally, there's a reason why I won't stay at a hotel of a lower quality than a Hampton Inn or a Holiday Inn (depending on how you would rank the quality). I'm not the kind of guy that normally gets the willies, but cheap hotels gross me out.

A motel 6 in Kansas City. 3/4" bullet proof glass separating front desk. Not a good sign. You had to pay a deposit to get the knob for the TV. Not a remote, the rotary knob. It was during the winter and the room was about 45 degrees. I crank the heat up and go to bed. Room barely warms up and in the morning, I figured out why. There was a 1/4" gap under the door and the cold wind was blowing right through and there was snow/frost on the carpet.

Wichita. Staying in my own room. Wake up to some dude demanding I open the door and let him in. I call front desk, too much of a whimp to actually check the door myself. By the time they get there, no one was there. Of course.

No cameras caught anything. But the people I traveled with were in the room next to me and heard the whole thing go down as well.

Breakfast the next day was awful. I mean breakfast from hell. Everything that was supposed to be hot was frozen and everything supposed to be cold was hot as hell.

Next night woke up three separate times to my room phone ringing. Again, to big of a whimp to answer it. Ive never had the front desk call as my alarm and the maids never came in my room to clean, so what or who the **** it was calling, I don't know.

Breakfast the next morning was great. I'll give them that. Best bacon and eggs and sausage gravy I've ever had

I actually found a strip of condoms under the bed at the Memorial Union in the morning after a stay. I didn't look too close.

I went on custom wheat harvest for three summers during college. We stayed in the cheapest hotel the town had to offer (which often was the only hotel in town) and they were never name-brand hotels. The worst part was sometimes having to room with 3 other guys in a twin full size or queen size bed room, simply because no other rooms were available. One season, one of the guys had to go to the hospital because he got bit multiple times by a brown recluse spider from the hotel room.

When I worked in the oilfield, we were working in south Texas, about an hour outside of San Antonio. I was still a trainee at the time. We didn't want to have to drive an hour back and forth every day so we tried to find the closest hotel possible to the job site. We ended up finding a hotel off of the interstate that had rooms available. It was a gas station/truck stop/hotel. It was as bad as you can imagine. Hot when we went inside, musty smelling, and dead bugs everywhere. I found out the next day that the job supervisor ended up sleeping in his truck because there was a scorpion in his room.

I don't know the name of the town but I only have one. I just as well begin by saying we were coming back from a snowmobile trip in Wyoming (12 hour drive) and we left at about 5 in the afternoon. The guy riding shotgun and I decide we should just buy a 12 pack of Mtn Dew and go all the way through rather than stopping to sleep for a few hours. So, we drive for about 5 hours, downing about 4 cans of Mtn Dew apiece and all of a sudden we get the mid March Nebraska fog so we have to stop. We pull off at the first town we get to and find this **** hole super cheap. We get into our room and it's 78 degrees in there. Since I've been mainlining caffeine for 5 hours and am uncomfortable I get about a half hour of sleep, we get up at 5 and leave again.

I suppose the hotel wasn't so bad but that night sucked.

First trip to Vegas. Friend of a friend told us that there was a little known place just off the old strip that he stayed at all the time for $40/night. Koala Inn was the name. He said, "You're never in your room anyway and you can walk to the strip in a few minutes."

We get there and it looks like it's straight outta CSI. Bars on the windows. Panhandlers lingering around. Some lady with curlers in her hair pushing a shopping cart down the hall into a room. A wide variety of stains on the carpet. And, to top it off, police tape on a room door halfway down the hall from us.

My wife lets me know about it every so often even though it's been 20 years ago.

Oddly enough, the shower was fantastic. That was good too because you definitely needed one.

When I moved here, I shipped my car from Oakland, so I drove it from Iowa to California, saying in Cheyenne, WY, Elko, NV and Modesto, CA.

In Modesto (can't remember the hotel name) it smelled like death and when I looked under the desk, what looked like a somewhat large pool of a blood stain was right there looking at me. Can't be sure that's what it was, but it was Modesto, so I wouldn't be shocked.

When we stayed in Shreveport, we stayed at a Motel 6. There was blood on the sheets.

I was stranded in SW Kansas a couple of years ago after a car wreck. Dear friends, never get off the main roads or take a shortcut when traveling through Kansas. It's not worth the risk of Dalton's Bedpost Motel in Meade, KS:

No hotel horror stories yet thankfully. I always check Tripadvisor reviews before picking a hotel. The worst "incident" I think we have had was finding pubic hairs on the toilet at a Disney World hotel. Not a big deal since the housekeeping staff promptly cleaned the toilet again and gave us our first night free in the hotel room. Gotta love Disney hospitality.
