What drove me nuts was George's got called twice for the same thing UV bigs did down low for the base runner most of the night. I even saw one screen before George's first where the guard came in and looked like an offensive lineman on Georges or McKay and had his shoulder into them chopping their feet, but none of these were called.

I agree, On at least 2 but as many as 4 of the VA picks in the first ten minutes of the game the movement and contact were much more severe than the two offensive fouls called on Niang. Niang did have one pick, in the 2nd half, that should have been a foul but the refs did not call that one. They were just very unpredictable.

They guy who complains constantly about refs making bad calls thinks it's a good thing to base calls on what makes games more exciting?

I don't think it's "good", but I'll take the consistent bias in the NBA over the random chaos that is college hoops officiating any day.

There's no saying for certain why NBA refs give such star treatment, but the result is...as you say...good for TV ratings.

Don't be so defensive, you're one of my favorite posters on here when you aren't jumping down my throat. I though you were making interesting points.

We would have won the national championship if Georges hadn't got that 4th foul! Just like against Michigan State. Or Ohio State.

That's 3 national championship banners. If you're not seeing them, you're in denial.

You know the one where he didn't touch the offensive player?

You know right about the time that ISU had cut the game to 7 and was rolling?

That 'foul' changed the course of the game. I would have really like to see what would have happened if Georges wasn't forced out of the game right there.

Not the reason ISU lost, but those officials should not work a tournament game ever again

I get that you're being tongue in cheek but MSU call was a little different.

That was in the Elite 8 and ISU and MSU were clearly the top 2 teams left in college basketball. It was a virtual road game to boot. It wasn't even like this year where a handful of teams could be seen as favorites right now, it was MSU/ISU and then a pretty clear drop. We had the most dominant non-injured player in college basketball on the team.

ISU would have been the favorite to win the NCAA had a few calls and plays went differently. None of that's hyperbole. Can't say the same thing about tonight and definitely not the OSU game.

Well, somebody's gotta ref. The Syracuse/Gonzaga crew blew huge calls at the end. Wisconsin got hosed. None of these games were Eades or Higgins, so they are available. But we all know they can't do the job. Who, then?

You and several of my Iowa fan friends all told me "you got screwed" during that stretch...but we have some here who are in permanent coping mechanism mode.

1. UVA clearly looked like the better team and dominated the 1st half
2. Niang looked far and away the best player in the game and they had no answer for him
3. ISU was on a run when the atrocious call happened
4. We'll never know if they had the gas to cut into that 7 point deficit but we know they got help stopping Georges that they did not deserve

That's my take and I'm fine with it. All time Cyclone legend went out playing like a total stud in all 4 postseason games.

This is about my perspective too. We got in a hole\VA got out to an early lead without the refs help. But the refs did a lot to make sure it stayed that way. Those who deny the influence they had on the game seemingly dont understand the effect momentum has on the game of basketball.

I don't think that anyone would say that the refs didn't favor UVA... Even the announcers seemed to question a couple of calls. When we were closing in we had several open shots and layups that could have brought us some momentum but they just didn't fall. UVA hit us in the mouth to start the game. I still feel like ISU is the better team. Too bad it isn't a series of 7 games!

It's important to consider also that with the refs being the humans they are, when they saw Virginia dominating us in the first 8-10 minutes of the game, the rest of the way through the game it's in their heads that "hey, it's obvious that ISU isn't on the same level as these guys, they can't play with them." If you were an impartial viewer from Montana, or North Dakota or something, you would probably have that same opinion even after the first few minutes of the game. Perhaps this subconsciously influenced some of the calls down the stretch as well, maybe with the thought being that our guys would be pressing the action to try to get back into the game, and that they would be pushing the boundaries of the rules. They would then make the calls with that knowledge.

I agree with both of you. That first 8 minutes killed us and we were really even from there on out, but that 4th foul on Georges was a bad call and killed our momentum.
Silly pride there can be only one factor that decides the outcome.

If we needed a perfect game then you're saying it was impossible for ISU to win.

If we had a perfect game two of our best plays wouldn't have resulted in 4 UVA free throws. That's not perfect.

I said almost perfect. Almost. Virginia beats us 8 out of ten times. I know how much many cyclone fans like to blame losses on officials, I even do at times. This was not one of those games.

I don't think so either, but there's also no denying we got the worst of the officiating breaks and the game is almost certainly closer without some horrible calls going against ISU. The best player in the game was sidelined by bad officiating.

I listened to part of it on national radio broadcast when Burton's "foul happened" (don't ask why)...the national guys were mispronouncing names of our players, yet they still said it was JUSTICE when a UVA player missed free throws not only because of that foul but because of how unfair Niang's foul was. That's when you know you were getting screwed.

It wasn't a 10+ point win for UVA. They played better most of the game and there's no way to say ISU would have won, but they did get help they didn't deserve. I had IOWA fans calling me telling me we were getting screwed.

Anyone who doesn't think that officiating has any effect on the result of a game is not an idiot. But they ARE in denial. There are many moving parts in any game that has officials and they are a part of it. If they call it incorrectly or unevenly for any portion of the game, they affect it. That is a fact, if you argue this, you are in denial.

Anyone who thinks that all officials are against ISU is not an idiot, but they are delusional. Most officials likely do not know who were are at this point and they probably don't care. They are trying to do their best to provide an evenly called game and likely have very few grudges against individual teams or players.

Anyone who thinks that officials are completely infallible is an idiot.

Anyone who thinks that ISU and its players are infallible is an idiot.

Anyone who thinks that single poor decisions by players, coaches AND officials within the flow of the game cannot, sometimes, dramatically affect the final outcome of a game, is a simpleton that has not lived a very full life.

The arguments posed on these last few pages are examples of all of the above.

To some extent, you are all right an you are all wrong. Saying that only one point of view correct shows a lack of intellect. Please up your game.

No not 8. I think it would be 6-6.5 out of 10. The Virginia guys said the first half was the best basketball all season by them. After the crappy 17-2 beginning it was back and forth.

Now that I've slept on it I feel like there was a strong ACC bias to the officiating last night. I know in our game and the end of the Wisconsin Notre Dame game (I even wanted Notre Dame) that was the case. I've seen others say the same thing for the Gonzaga game and I think that is probably true, but I was focusing a little too much on getting pictures of the banners at the United Center.

I understand that officials can't be perfect and I don't think they do it on purpose, but it gets kind of old never being on the good side of officiating. Maybe I wouldn't be so down on officiating if that was the case.

I have no problem saying UVA, and I'm sure other teams, are simply the better team in some hypothetical long series. UVA has a very solid shot at the whole thing and I think ISU would have still been somewhat a of a longshot to win 3 more after this game.

The year I don't feel that was the case was ISU/MSU in 2000, I don't think there was a team that would have beat ISU a majority of the time late in that season. We had the best 1-2 punch in basketball. I think that's the genesis of a lot of the "would of", "could of" our fans including myself tend to dwell on. It started from a pretty real place.

Virginia is the better team.

Niang's fourth, which was a horrendous call, was a pivotal point in the game. At that specific point, ISU had control. That was their best opportunity to completely close the gap. I think they would have as well. Probably would have still faded away in the last 5 minutes but you can discuss hypotheticals until you are blue in the face. Results in basketball are pretty fickle by default. Of course the refs can change the flow of the game. Burton's foul on the clean block was also head scratching.

Officiating aside, the game was evenly played after about the 12 minute mark in the first.

Well said. THe foul calls(19-13) were fairly uneven and it wasn't like we were playing belly button defense. I can understand the officials giving the #1 seed a few more breaks to make their NCAA bosses look smarter, but I was disappointed they gave our all-American little respect, who Virginia couldn't stop except when he was on the bench.

The frustrating thing for me about the moving screen calls is they could call it every time a pick is set. It's alot like offensive holding or pass interference in football. If you want to call if every play you could. Does george set illegal screens alot? Yes. Does everyone else in basketball set illegal screens alot? Yes. So how does a senior warrior playing his heart out get called for the only 2 illegal screens all game?
