Great to see him back. The new arm-slot is gonna take some getting used to, but he looked pretty good. Seemed to have very good command, got a K, a ground-out, and a fly-out, along with giving up 2 bloop singles. Here's hoping he gets to stick around for a while. :smile:

Tonight in Mulder's first start he lasted 1/3 of an inning and left with shoulder discomfort.

Oh, they've done it plenty--it just guts the farm system, which is just starting to recover.

Fortunately, a lefty reliever might not be terribly expensive/

I have a bad feeling Mulder has thrown his last pitch. His post-game interview was probably one of the most painful interviews I've ever watched. If you don't feel for the guy, you're just not human. He's trying (and tried) so hard to get back, been teased with being healthy, and had the rug pulled from under him a half-dozen times by now. I for one appreciate his effort(s), but at this point, I think he should seriously consider hangin 'em up.

I didn't get my hopes up for tonight, but I definitely expected he'd be able to make another start even if this one went bad. That might be an impossibiility now. :sad:

The Cardinals the last 2 years with Carpenter and Mulder remind me way too much of the Cubs when they were counting on Wood and Prior. Eventually you have to move on and plan to not have them and if you do get one healthy again like the Cubs did with Wood then great. You can't let it dictate how you shape your roster when they spend more time on the DL than on the mound.

The comparison to Wood and Prior is certainly apt for Mulder, and we will see with Carpenter, since he should be set to begin his rehab assignment in A ball after the All-Star break. Cards have a lot of pitching prospects in the minors. In some ways, having Mulder leave the game after 16 pitches on Wednesday is a good thing for St. Louis because at least now we know with 100% certainty that we can't count on him at all.

Jaime Garcia was called up from AAA to take Mulder's place as a lefty in the pen. He was struggling somewhat as a starter in Memphis. Mulder owned A and AA hitters but got blasted in all his appearances in AAA. If he could never get AAA hitters out, why did they try him on the road against the freakin' Phillies?
