Back in the 70's before college I worked at the local Hy-Vee. Required dress for the males was NON-jeans and a white shirt with tie.

I hated always wearing the white shirt and decided after I left there I'd never wear a white dress shirt again. About 15 years ago I purchased a nice white oxford dress shirt because I wanted something different. Came home and put it on, THEN suddenly remember the promise I'd made to myself to never wear a white dress shirt again.

I laughed at myself and decided that "never" for me was about 20 years.

Man the two clip on ties I rotated between while working at Hy-Vee in High School sure were worn out. I mainly worked in the back room and dairy department.

My grandma's funeral in Fort Dodge was an experience. I wore a black dress, black cardigan (it was in November). Husband wore either a full suit or a shirt/tie/dress pants, I forget which. Grandma had been in the Country Club, so a bunch of her friends were dressed incredibly nicely - and then some of the younger crowd, cousins and siblings' friends and spouses, wore straight-up t-shirts and jeans. It was just a really strange sight.
Really strange sights sums up Fort Dodge pretty well.

I never like being the under dressed person for an event so I'll usually err on the more formal side. Suits for weddings and funerals. I can always take the jacket off and lose the tie if I feel too dressed up. For nice nights out with the wife it just depends on what she wears and where we're going. Very rarely go for the full suit though, usually a little more casual with nice jeans and a blazer.

Going to weddings especially in rural areas is always interesting. I generally just go with a good shirt and tie. I have only ever worn a full suit to interviews and my wedding.

Went to a wedding in Beverly Hills and a woman there was wearing a tube top, sweat pants, and flip flops. Also had a doo rag.

I wear a suit and tie every day for work, so I try to avoid dressing up on the weekends if possible. For weddings or a funeral I'll typically wear dress pants, dress shirt and a jacket, and avoid a tie if possible. It's funny though, my wife's side of the family is very, shall we say, "not formal", so if you wear khakis and a polo you are the best dressed person there. I'm not kidding, it's like a race to see who can put a hat back on first after a wedding.

In my experience, the baseball cap syndrome is men who are not confident about their hairlines. I can understand that would be hard to accept.

I'm short. Like, super-short. 5'2" in shoes short. So, by all rights, I should wear heels constantly. Except the thing is that I walk like an idiot in them, I just can't make it look right. So, I usually just wear really short heels, wedges, or similar. I've just embraced my shortness.

6'2" here and if I'm in heels I get glares from other women like I just murdered their firstborn. The problem is flats just don't look right if you're dressed "up" at all. They are great with maxi-skirts but that's not really dressed up. My daughter is probably going to end up taller than me (5'10" now, at 13 yo) and she's going to have it even worse.

I always feel like a dress and heels are appropriate for weddings and funerals, but at the weddings, take the heels off to dance and at the funerals, they just dig into the ground at the cemetery. Plus I don't feel like torturing my feet any more. So now I just forget it and wear comfortable shoes.

This.

I had some pretty nice suits and some dresses back in the day, but I'm too old & fat to wear the 3" spikes I used to sport (short woman syndrome...). One thing nice about aging is worrying less about stylish and sexy, and thinking more about comfort. :)

Yep, that's why it took me so long to give up the heels. Flats just don't look dressy. They do have some kind of sparkly flat sandals now that might work for a summer wedding, but not traipsing out to the cemetery in January in those.

Also 6'2". I used to get lots of glares when I wore heals too. It probably had something to do with the hairy legs and 5 o'clock shadow.

The nice thing about being wicked-short is that the vast majority of people I meet are going to be taller than me, regardless, so an extra 2" on someone 6'2" isn't going to make me look enough shorter for it to matter. :) I wouldn't give you death glares!

I agree, flat-flats are just too dressed-down, so I usually try to have at least a kitten heel or similar. Something that I can manage without breaking a leg, but still gives a little class.

Btw, I was 5'9" at age 10 and haven't grown taller in the last 45 years, so maybe she won't grow too much more. But if she does, hey basketball star. I was dominant in 5th and 6th grade, it was all downhill after that.

But I would think buying clothes is a struggle at 6'2". I have a hard time getting pants long enough cause I am all legs, 34" inseam.

I have the exact opposite problem. I am short, and all of my height is in my waist and torso. Short legs, so even petite pants are often too long.

I'll range anywhere from khakis and a button up to full shirt and tie.

My work allows jeans and t-shirts, but I can't handle wearing a t-shirt to work. People who do look so unprofessional. Literally people in the office wearing concert t-shirts.

For my outdoor wedding last summer we went with gray slacks and vest with a nice teal shirt underneath. It was pretty sharp if I say so myself and I didn't suffer heat stroke like I would have in a tux.
