If there was a 16-team playoff...

Ive done this every year as its the format I would love to see. You go with the 10 conference champs (I still say everyone who plays in FBS should get a shot at it) and 6 at-large's. The first round would be played on the better seeds home field, with the quarter, semis, and champ played at neutral location. You would seed based off final rankings. Here is what it would look like this year.

1- Alabama (SEC Champ)
16- Appalachian State (Sun Belt Champ)

8- Wisconsin (at-large)
9- USC (at-large)

5- Penn State (Big 10 Champ)
12- Western Michigan (MAC Champ)

4-Washington (Pac 12 Champ)
13- Temple (AAC Champ)

6- Michigan (at-large)
11- Florida State (at-large)

3- Ohio State (at-large)
14- San Diego State (Mountain West Champ)

7- Oklahoma (Big 12 Champ)
10- Colorado (at-large)

2- Clemson (ACC Champ)
15- Western Kentucky (Conference USA Champ)

First 4 out- Oklahoma State, Louisville, Auburn, West Virginia

Just do it like the basketball tourney and make a 64-team tournament. If you started the tourney during the 2nd week of December, it wouldn't run much longer than the season does now anyway. Make the bowl games part of the tournament.

Hec, just put all the FCS teams in the tourney. More money for all!!!

Agreed. At 16 teams - 2 teams will play an extra 33% of the season.

I think you go to 8 and remove conference championship games.

Curious to why you say that? I dont think it ever will because it pretty much makes bowls irrelevant. However, for someone who could care less about bowls, I think it would be awesome. Some pretty good matchups built in there, and makes for an exciting 4 weeks worth of playoff games.

I don't want to see the bowl format go away for us. Also, I don't really like the idea of all the conference champs in the playoff. Watching Alabama vs App State and Clemson vs WKU would create a lot of 52-10 type scores.

Big 12 will always be at a disadvantage.

Conferences like SEC/Big10/ACC have so many weak teams that it's easy for multiple teams to have good records.

I don't think App State and Western Kentucky deserve to be in the playoff. 8 teams is the sweet spot, balancing excitement and opportunity for teams to win it all with the regular season mattering and only the best teams getting in. Just my opinion.

You could still balance the opportunity with a 16-team field, but take only the top 8 automatic bids (conference champs) and 8 at-large. It still provides a path to the title for all but the two lowest conferences each year, while increasing at-large by 2.

The players hit so much harder and play so much faster at the D1 level that is why they shouldn't play extra games. Should guys like Leonard Fourette be playing 4 extra games. In my opinion no his future is NFL. I picked him because it was easy I could have chosen plenty of other first rounders. Where will the games be played. First round home team gets the game. Then you may have teams playing in -10 temps. That is crazy as well. It also interferes with college BBALL. Many northern D2 schools have domes to play in. The best 4 should be in and the Conference Championship games should be just like the Big 12 is doing next year #1 vs #2. it would have been Ohio ST. VS Michigan in Big 10 for the chance to be in final 4. Just my thoughts. I think these kids play enough games at a very high level and shouldnt be put in harms way with a bunch of extra games.
