The players hit so much harder and play so much faster at the D1 level that is why they shouldn't play extra games. Should guys like Leonard Fourette be playing 4 extra games. In my opinion no his future is NFL. I picked him because it was easy I could have chosen plenty of other first rounders. Where will the games be played. First round home team gets the game. Then you may have teams playing in -10 temps. That is crazy as well. It also interferes with college BBALL. Many northern D2 schools have domes to play in. The best 4 should be in and the Conference Championship games should be just like the Big 12 is doing next year #1 vs #2. it would have been Ohio ST. VS Michigan in Big 10 for the chance to be in final 4. Just my thoughts. I think these kids play enough games at a very high level and shouldnt be put in harms way with a bunch of extra games.
Yes, because those same guys when they get to the NFL will never be asked to play in 16 or 17 games in a season.

I think an 8 team playoff is the sweet spot - I don't think 16 teams is necessary however I think the number of games argument is silly.

8's probably the right number for having the most legit teams play it off.

16 is a great number for having what could be some interesting games, sort of similar to OU/BSU or even when Utah beat Alabama a few years ago. People love upsets just like the bball tourney.

That would be awful to watch.

I still like the idea of re-shuffling the P5 conferences to 4 conferences - 2 divisions each. The Division winners make the "playoffs" and play the conference championships Dec 1st range. Losers get to play in a bowl game like they do today and the 4 winners go to the final 4.

Your schedule would only include P5 schools and everyone in the division would play the same teams.

Interesting. Bowls could be paired up by records cross conference.

You would have to eliminate something. Can't have those final teams playing that many more games. Conference championship also makes them play another game.

They are also going to have a lot more practices that the teams that don't participate in don't get.

8 is the way to go. 5 Power 5 champs and 3 at larges

If FCS teams can play up to 17 games a season, so can FBS.

How much would these teams have to get paid to potential travel for 3 extra games in addition to the championship game? Many also bring their bands. Also are fans going to travel to that many games (5 potentially)?

I like the idea, but I still think a 8 team playoff is best.
Or 12 teams with the top 4 seeds getting a bye and then the next round games played at the home stadiums of the top 4 seeds. Semis and championship at neutral sites.

To each his own... I think it would be really fun to watch Appalachian State get a shot at Alabama, even though they'd probably lose by 7 touchdowns.

Another aspect of getting all or most of the conferences in with an auto-bid: It at least slightly increases the intrigue of watching sub-P5 conference title games (American, MAC, C-USA, Mountain West). (Similarity to Championship Week in CBB).

FBS is only major U.S. sport in which roughly 50% of the teams begin the season with almost no chance to compete for the national title.

Excellent point - I meant to watch the Mountain West championship last weekend but I completely forgot about it. I guarantee I would have watched it if I knew the winner was going to the 16 team playoff.
