Maybe it's used for canning? Like grabbing a jar out of boiling water, or putting a lid on?

My first thought was, "Old, that's not old, it's plastic."

Reminds me of a life truism. Anything you remember getting is not old. Cleaning out our Father's things we'd ask what some 'old' thing was and he'd immediately reply, "That's not old, I remember when I got that."

Still - I have no idea what that is.
