Who does ISU go after

A lot to like on that list. Any idea how much we would reasonably need to offer these guys? Tried looking up salaries and found that Popolizio was making 102,200 in 2014 but didn't find anything else in my limited search. Obviously need to pay well for assistants as well or the HC will be screwed no matter who it is. That is if we are going to be in the market for a new coach of course

I would think our budget for HC and AC combined would need to be $250-$300K. As buf said, camp and auxiliary money are important. Most these guys know that and manage them everywhere they coach.

I don't know what resources he has at Illinois compared to what he would have here.

Interesting...those are a lot of my same thoughts. He may be a good coach someday, but don't think he's done anything to prove he's ready yet.

IMO, Hahn would be good but I think only way he comes back to midwest is Minnesota, which may happen the AD is on a terror. With that said what about Eggum?, he's done good with whats going on up there. I also think Perry would be good hire. Askren would definitely bring some energy back.

I think you have to get somebody who has shown they can produce NCAA champs.

He just announced he is training again. I seriously doubt he would consider coaching jobs at this point. However, if it ever would work out, would be a home run hire. Worth making the phone call.

I don't disagree with the sentiment but does Gable have the ability to remove his black and gold glasses and look outside his own coaching tree? I know he's an ISU donor and all. Just asking. Gibbons, with all his travel for broadcasting, is a great call. He sees a lot and probably hears more behind the scenes talk than just about anybody in the country. He could provide some valuable input.

I think so with Gable. I'm sure he (like the majority of Iowa fans I've talked with) wants to see Iowa State back to being competitive. Makes for a much better rivalry and gets kids wanting to come to the state of Iowa to wrestle.

I agree, if all pollard is going to do, is Hire someones Assistant....dont bother, nothing will change with wrestling without a major infusion of money or a big name wrestling coach who can recruit using his name, not Im the wrestling coach at Iowa State

For every successful wrestling coach that was a "big name", there is probably a "big name" that was unsuccessful. Hiring current Assistant Coaches that have gained valuable experience in recruiting and day-to-day operations of the team and associated club is a great avenue.

I've seen a lot of people concerned about keeping this recruiting class together as an essential element of this decision and that is spot on...we don't want to nuke this thing and start all over. There is obvious concern about what shaking up the coaching staff would do, but the flip side of that is, what does uncertainty do? I'm sure the talk about KJ's job status is everywhere in wrestling circles and has only intensified since Friday night. Now that Pollard has seemingly tipped his hand other schools are going to smell blood in the water and I'm sure they will be sniffing around our our top level commits. That's just as big of a concern as turning the staff over when it comes to losing recruits.

He would want what is best for wrestling. When wrestling is at its best is when ISU and Iowa matter. There isn't anything wrong looking at his coaching tree.

True, but they're already signed for this year and the main recruiting season for next year will happen after this is resolved one way or another. So while it can't be helping it would be a lot worse for this to be happening in the summer/fall.

Now, if Pollard keeps Jackson but doesn't extend his contract so he's a lame duck next year that would surely hurt recruiting.

If any coaches try to poach a signed wrestler without Iowa State permission, they might get a visit by the NCAA. I believe that is the rule

I'm guessing they can find an avenue to let the kid know that if something falls through at ISU, *wink, wink, nudge, nudge* you're welcome to give us a call to talk about your wrestling future. If there's a chance that these kids might have reason to question their commitment, I can't imagine our competition is just going to sit back and hope the kid falls in their lap when/if they change their mind. I'm not saying I like it, but it's the underbelly of recruiting in every sport.
