Well, I'm just glad that our guys did not end up letting this loss be more embarrassing than what it actually was. As it is, it is a bad loss, but it had the potential to be a bad blowout. The refs really didn't do us any favors and Prohm continues his love for small ball lineups even while we get pwned on the boards. Anyway, here are my observations from today's game. Please feel free to add some of your own that I may have missed.

Amen on the Miles Simon option. Not sure we have ever won a game with that tool doing our games.

I made a comment about this in the Game thread as well. Apparently saying Young was going to be in more, just meant more times, not actually in at the crucial juncture of the game.

Another curious move was taking MT out after Burgon got his 3rd foul. Perhaps he didn't have a choice but leave Burton in, but taking MT out was hardly feeding the hot hand.

If we made one of the missed layups, if we had not made one of the dumb turnovers, and if we had put a hand in the face of the guy at the end of the first half . . . we would have won.

I thought I was the only person who did this......nice to meet a soul brother. (Or sister, if that's the case.)

Also, I think I have a possible rationale for the nonchalant start. It was the arena. When we play at Hilton or the Phog, there is tremendous energy in the building. You could see on TV that the place was only half full. I had a friend at the game say that she thought you could hear anyone in the building who yelled during a free throw. The deadness of the environment may have affected our players. Of course, that is not acceptable, but it may provide some explanation for why we could possibly be nonchalant.

Agree on everything except the end of half shot. I thought that was well defended. They were mostly out of control and the guy grabbed it and threw up a prayer...it must have went 25' in the air. We probably would have gotten called for a foul if we were any closer.

We do ourselves absolutely NO favors but I'll be damned if we aren't an unbelievably unlucky team, even by ISU standards. Somebody linked an article that showed Kenpom rating us as something around 320 out 351 teams in "luck." I have no idea how that's quantified but I can sure see it. We go on a great run only to have them throw in a bomb at half. They get a 3 out of a guy that literally hasn't scored an effing point this year. Blocked shot right to one of their guys for an and 1.

Make no mistake, I'm not blaming luck for this loss. Our inability to do anything that looked like winning basketball for the first 12 minutes of the game is the reason we lost, but good lord could we use a break now and then.

By the way is there any logical reason why Smart doesn't have a single guy up when they are shooting FT's?

Makes no sense whatsoever.

Probably fair to blame some of our close losses on not having a reliable way to score at the end of games, but we definitely haven't caught any breaks this year either. Down to 327 out of 351 in KenPom's Luck statistic.

I don't know Shaka's reasoning but Fennelly did it against Baylor a week ago, I think it was to take away the fast break on a miss from them. The women shoot pretty good free throws and we were outsized and out quicked so back off the line and don't give up the quick transition.

They should spend pregame warming up and getting focused, instead of messing around with circus shots. It's no wonder it takes them all first half to get into the game. You PLAY HOW YOU PRACTICE. Six seniors on the team and only MT looks serious pregame. After all the disappointing losses this year they should want to be getting dialed into the game as soon as possible, not waiting until they are behind double digits. They have proven that they know how to beat anyone (during their comebacks).

That makes sense like you said when you have a good FT shooting team and want to make sure you don't give up any easy transition buckets.

But Texas is a horrible FT shooting team and I certainly wouldn't say a slow team that would get beat in transition.

They're still young though so may miss assignments especially against ISU who occasionally literally takes about 3 seconds to score full court.

Yeah, those racerback jerseys seem a little overly feminine to me.

I had three distinct reactions:
1) PUT A BODY ON YOUR MAN WHEN THE BALL GOES UP!
How many times did a Texas miss get short rebounded and slammed home?
2) IF YOU ARE MISSING FROM OUTSIDE, DRIVE THE LANE, GET CLOSER SHOTS, SEE IF YOU CAN DRAW A STINKING FOUL! (AND DON'T JUST STAND AROUND!)
Movement makes pressure. Keep the defense moving and you will get better opportunities to score.
And 3) PICK AND ROLL STARTS WITH A GOOD PICK.
A senior laden team should be able to run some basic plays.

Then I realized- same thing that has been happening all year...
