Holy cats got home and flipped on the TV tour de France was on some dude dumped his bike (45mph) into a ravine on the descent skidded across the road sans bike and broadsided another biker taking him out. The guy who led most the way down (Bardet) got aced out in the last 2 km came back to finish 4th.

Personal biking notes good 20 on Fri. Hard 20 on Sat. just seemed like it took forever just not much energy. Now to talk myself into going out later tonite.

Did inaugural ride with new bike yesterday. Nice 27 mile loop with Cyclone buddy. He's much younger (like who isn't) but is more of a dirt biking guy so didn't totally bury me on the paved trails. Bike checked out okay, undecided on the saddle. I have a hell of time with pressure points on road bike saddles.

Thanks everyone. Had a family get together today because my mom's cousin from AZ is here, and it just happened to be my birthday. My cousin, mom's cousin's daughter, is flying Tuesday with her fiancee. I haven't seen her in 10+ years and she's the closest family member my age. We're probably all getting together again on Friday. Her fiancee is a city kid, so we're going to have him try to do farm stuff.

Happy birthday to you and Velo.

Be careful with the farm stuff. Take it too far while continuing to laugh at him is not going to help family relations.

Just got back from 21 with 1 big hill. Was able to push it up a couple of small hills afterwards so maybe I won't die if I keep trying.

CG did you go through the lakes country in Northern England? Rick Steves on IPTV is there it looks beautiful.

Velo do you have one of those Brooks saddles is there much maintenance to one? I would guess oil it once a yr?

This is gonna be about 16 hours but the client has been working through the upgrade issues so at least it will be a go as opposed to the dreaded no go.
There better be a bar still open by the time I get out of here.

@NWICY Watching Tour de France tonight and just saw the Richie Porte accident. Damn!

BTW, I will have to stop using my slender frame as an excuse for my biking. A lot of these guys are smaller or as lean as I am. I will continue to use age as an excuse, however. ;)

Wife's great uncle passed away up in BCCs area. I have been instructed to stay home with LittleWx though so I won't be making the four hour round trip drive Tuesday night. YAY

Stretched my car's legs for the first real time this weekend. 510 miles on one tank pretty much all highway got me 36mpg. #Winning.

I have an Ideale on my old road bike which is a simpler version of a hard leather saddle.. Similar to this one:
3495549750_9f17dc0505_z.jpg

I have given it no maintenance other than exercising it periodically, by which I mean riding it. It was on the bike when I bought it used. It probably should get more attention.

The hard leather over a minimalist frame looks incredibly uncomfortable but it soon forms to your anatomy and becomes very comfortable. I know a few people who swear by Brooks saddles.

BTW, yes those are rivets, hence the old cycling phrase "on the rivet" referring to a rider who is at his limit. A spent rider will often push forward in the saddle trying to coax the last bit of drive out of exhausted legs putting them on that forward rivet.

Here is the underside of one of these saddles.
main.php

The only place the frame is supporting the leather is where you see rivets. The majority of you is supported solely by the leather allowing it to form over time to your anatomy.

One more thing. It is a common misconception that more surface area of a saddle will give a more comfortable ride. That would be great if you were still on a saddle. In actuality more surface area means more opportunity for chafing as your body moves repetitively through the peddling motion. Obviously there are extremes, but I use a pretty sleek racing saddle on my carbon road bike even on RAGBRAI. The sit bones need a little training before the ride but I don't have much chafing during the ride. Pretty much everyone who rides the whole ride will have an uncomfortable rear end by the end of the week. The best things to do are always wear cycling shorts with a quality chamois and use some sort of chamois butter whenever you are going on a long ride or a ride where you expect to be wet for a few hours (either rain or sweat).

I'll bet everyone on here wishes he never asked me about saddles...

Sorry for your and your wife's loss. Nasty weather last night golf ball hail south of where I live. Hoping the farm didn't get it.

Only biking advice I have, don't ask your secretary how far away a town is for a bike ride. I was new to town right after college and asked my secretary how far this town was. She thought I meant this other town and said about 5 miles. I thought a nice 10 mile stretch was about right. Was rolling on a cheap mountain bike and this road doesn't have much for typical intersections. I got back and was way too tired. Later found out I had went 25 miles.

Time for Progressive to ditch Flo. I think she's ran her course. I used to like those commercials, now don't care for them at all.

Eh, I'm pretty much a tease either way. I took my shoes off around 8:30 and can only find one of them at the moment. Too old for heels ugh. Showed the waiter my double jointed toes, I'm sure he thought that was hot, he brought two bottles to our table after that.

This kid is in four weddings this year. That is a lot of tux money.
The year we were married, I was in 3 other weddings. They were in New Jersey, Cleveland and Chicago.

We went on a quick brewery tour of NE Mpls on Friday. Here's a couple of notes:

Best beer - Mosaic Oatmeal from 612.
Coolest building - Bauhaus Brewlabs
Coolest neighborhood - Dangerous Man
Oddest location - Boom Island (Also gets the award for having met a person that most looks like Steve Buscemi)
Best food - Taco Truck Pizza from Dayblock
