Velo do you have one of those Brooks saddles is there much maintenance to one? I would guess oil it once a yr?
I have an Ideale on my old road bike which is a simpler version of a hard leather saddle.. Similar to this one:
I have given it no maintenance other than exercising it periodically, by which I mean riding it. It was on the bike when I bought it used. It probably should get more attention.
The hard leather over a minimalist frame looks incredibly uncomfortable but it soon forms to your anatomy and becomes very comfortable. I know a few people who swear by Brooks saddles.
BTW, yes those are rivets, hence the old cycling phrase "on the rivet" referring to a rider who is at his limit. A spent rider will often push forward in the saddle trying to coax the last bit of drive out of exhausted legs putting them on that forward rivet.
Here is the underside of one of these saddles.
The only place the frame is supporting the leather is where you see rivets. The majority of you is supported solely by the leather allowing it to form over time to your anatomy.
One more thing. It is a common misconception that more surface area of a saddle will give a more comfortable ride. That would be great if you were still on a saddle. In actuality more surface area means more opportunity for chafing as your body moves repetitively through the peddling motion. Obviously there are extremes, but I use a pretty sleek racing saddle on my carbon road bike even on RAGBRAI. The sit bones need a little training before the ride but I don't have much chafing during the ride. Pretty much everyone who rides the whole ride will have an uncomfortable rear end by the end of the week. The best things to do are always wear cycling shorts with a
quality chamois and use some sort of chamois butter whenever you are going on a long ride or a ride where you expect to be wet for a few hours (either rain or sweat).
I'll bet everyone on here wishes he never asked me about saddles...
