One big plus came out of last week: I finally convinced my wife to get our passports while we were off. It sounds like we may head down to Cancun or somewhere down that way next year with some friends of ours. Does anyone have any good recommendations? We're looking for all-inclusive kid-friendly resorts.

Bonus points for recommendations where we aren't likely to get murdered or kidnapped.

I have several friends who are heavily into supporting animal shelters and they often share "clickbait" stories of individual animals. Some can be pretty interesting, but I find the narratives to be ill-informed at times. The most recent one was about a "broken" cat, a pretty little girl born with a deformity of her front legs that was not getting adopted. Take a good look at the picture and see if you can figure out why I believe they are ill-informed...

Don't know much about all-inclusives (I don't eat or drink enough) or kid friendly but Cancun and Playa resorts are generally safer than KC or Mpls. 5 million visitors to Cancun last year and how many horror stories have you heard? They had a rare night club shooting in the tourist zone of Playa last winter at the Blue Parrot but I doubt you will be hanging out with your kids at 3 a.m. in the morning in a nightclub known for drugs. I generally feel as safe at the resorts as I do here in my own neighborhood.

Just pick a resort with good pools since (IMHO) the waves and drop-off can be pretty unsafe for kids. If you are looking for kid friendly beaches, the Cancun north line of hotels/resorts along the Cancun strip have a much shallower and calmer beach. The hotels on the east shore, not so much. I'd also look for resorts maybe a little ways away from the noisy nightlife stuff. Resorts too close to the middle of north end or central run of the Avenue in Play or those right at the north to east bend on the hotel blvd in Cancun.

@VeloClone Forgot to mention when biking the other day over between Hopkins and Mpls we came up on a cop car with flashing lights on the path. Rode by and chatted with a group of road bikers who had been riding as a group and all got tagged (like a dozen of them) for running a stop sign on the bike path. Since this was St. Louis Park it likely had nothing to do with actual safety. They are one of the Twin Cities ticket traps leaders. Used to live in that burb and the cops hated everyone that hung out at the Excelsior Blvd establishments and hated everyone that lived in apartments. Still don't like that burb.

Interesting since riding that stretch of path is odd as every intersection seems to be different as to how it is signed. And, of course, had to stop less than a mile later for a bunch of motorcycles who all zipped right through their stop sign.

I used to know that stretch of trail well as it was my bike commute route from my home in Hopkins to downtown Minneapolis.

There was a big deal a while back about people getting ticketed on the bike trail by sheriff deputies as they took the trail through Sheldahl. There was some disagreement about whether people were only getting ticketed if they totally blew through the stops or if they were getting ticketed for not coming to a complete, foot on the pavement stop.

I'm guessing they get complaints when bikers blow through intersections causing vehicles with the ROW to have to emergency stop so their solution is to nail anyone they can find that doesn't come to a complete stop even if riding responsibly. Classic case of swatting flies with a sledge hammer. I would welcome a little enforcement in downtown MPLS, however.

I'll agree with Boxster. I've never felt unsafe in a touristy part of Mexico, except, maybe, a little in Acapulco.

When we decided to go to Puerto Vallarta this spring, this hotel on the Mayan Riviera was our other choice https://www.oceanhotels.net/en/riviera-maya-hotels/ocean-coral-turquesa. Our travel agent said we wouldn't go wrong with either choice. When we went a couple of years ago with just adults we stayed in another hotel owned by this chain. The service was great, the food was good, the bartenders were fun and the grounds were immaculate.

We rode a few minutes with one of the guys and chatted a little. I got the impression they kinda blew through as a group when the lead gave them an all clear. The guy didn't seem to burnt about it. As he said he "gets it" but wished they were also ticketing the cars at stop signs which they rarely do. The 4-way stop 1/2 mile from me at Glenwood and Teddy Wirth Pkwy is crazy. When it's busy and traffic is from all four directions it's a game of chicken and total ******** not willing to yield a turn. I just stay away during rush hour. When it is not busy it's one series of cars after another just blowing through.

I would say that the intersection is a prime candidate for a roundabout but with all of the bike trails there it would be a problem. Most Minnesota drivers haven't figured out how to safely and efficiently interact with other vehicles in those. They do a really piss poor job with pedestrians and bicycles.

If people would just figure out they should signal when leaving a roundabout about half of the waiting to enter one would be eliminated.

Afraid you are going to miss our big bowl game?
we are seeing more and more projects scheduled over holidays weekends. It's bad enough that we work almost every weekend but now some clients are deciding the holiday weekends are a period of extended downtime so they want work done then.

My brother used to deal with something similar. It wasn't every weekend, but the plants he worked at were out of production during the Christmas/New Year weeks so they planned all of their scheduled maintenance during that time frame. It might just mean regular work weeks during the holidays or it might mean 14 days straight through the holidays if there were some big issues to deal with along with regular annual maintenance.

So my employer changed ownership groups and with that went my work health insurance plan. Anyone been in this kind of situation? Not sure what I'm to do now in the middle of the year.

I have been through multiple ownership changes and can't ever remember losing insurance. Is your insurance already gone or are you just hearing that it will go away once this transfer of ownership is complete?
