It wont with Hendricks coming back. Hendricks, who is pitching at AA tonight, would likely pitch on Saturday against St Louis, and Montgomery will be moved to the pen at that point. My guess is the rotation will shake out like this:

Today- Lester
Tomorrow- Lackey
Wednesday- Montgomery
Friday- Arrieta
Saturday- Hendricks
Sunday- Quintana
Monday 24th- Lester
Tuesday 25th- Lackey
Wednesday 26th- Arrieta
Thursday 27th- Hendricks
Friday 28th- Quintana
Saturday 29th- Lester
Sunday 30th- Lackey
Sounds like they are going to wait until Monday to throw Hendricks, and avoid pitching Quintana against the Sox. Lester will pitch Saturday. So it should look like this...

Tonight- Lackey
Tomorrow- Montgomery
Friday- Arrieta
Saturday- Lester
Sunday- Quintana
Monday 24th- Hendricks
Tuesday 25th- Lackey
Wednesday 26th- Arrieta
Thursday 27th- Lester
Friday 28th- Quintana
Saturday 29th- Hendricks
Sunday 30th- Lackey

You remember that time the Cubs won the World Series?
That was awesome.

...and I love it.

I wasn't able to watch, but judging from the box score, it looks like Lackey pitched pretty well. I'm not in the "DFA him" crowd. I think he was pitching through pain in the first half, and if that's behind him now, I absolutely believe he can be perfectly effective. Especially as a number 5 starter. Honestly, anything you get from that fifth spot should be gravy, and fans got pretty spoiled with Hammel taking up that spot. All you really expect from the last guy is for him to not be a total disaster. I think Lackey can easily manage that if he's healthy.

Guessing I'm one of the few awake on the west coast...closing that gap pretty quick. 2.5 back!

Maybe the All Star snub is paying off.

People greatly overestimate how easy it is to find a good fifth starter. The Nationals just signed Edwin Jackson to start for them. Montgomery has not been a good option as a starter, he's had a lot of starts where he couldn't even get through five innings. Butler has also barely made it through five innings in half of his starts. Lackey just needs a marginal improvement to be a more than acceptable fifth starter. If he can be a guy who puts up something like 6 IP with 3 ER's most starts, I'll take that any day from your fifth guy.

After last night, I'm satisfied with keeping Lackey there.

And also having Montgomery in the pen allows Maddon to have a quicker hook on Lackey if he is struggling. When the Cubs were starting Butler and Montgomery, plus with Arrieta having the occasional short start, he really couldn't risk pulling Lackey early, he needed someone to eat innings and protect the bullpen. If you know you're likely to get 6+ every time out from Lester, Quintana and Hendricks, you can get real aggressive with the pen when you need to.

Id like to see some consistency with his starts. He has had about 3 or 4 starts this season that were just as good as last night, then he will go out the next game and give up a lot. What I want from Lacky is an ERA in the low to mid 4's, and to be able to go 5-6 innings each night.

What actually really surprised me in looking at Lackey's starts this year, he hasn't had an outing shorter than 5 innings. He averaging 5.73 innings per start this season, Id just like for his ERA to go down about half a run.
