Winning the OT coin toss and picking to go on offense in the 1996 Wyoming game. 1st OT game with the new alternating possession from the 25yd line rule. Lost 41-38 in OT

Good find. I remember thinking to myself: Did Coach Mac not talk to a single high school football coach? They've been playing this OT format for many years, and every single one of them would tell you that when you win the coin toss, you choose DEFENSE first EVERY TIME!

The Blarge was the first one that came to my mind - because it would have led to a national title.

But Niang breaking his foot, if he stays healthy - think they could have won it all.......that could have had rippling effects with Hoiberg landing a few more recruits which could have turned ISU into a power house in college basketball.

That was my first time attending an Iowa State game. I was 8-9 years old and my grandmother took me to it, but we had seats right next to the student section. Heard some salty language, to say the least. We left in the second-half early because of that and the fact we thought we had it won given the score of the game. Glad it set the tone right in numerous ways.

That ******* blarge.... that game STILL pisses me off. 1st game all year that Fizer fouled out. Hmmm, had to be the crooked officiating?

Not to mention a 4-loss (total) Big 12 regular season CHAMPS and Big 12 Tourny CHAMPS receiving a ******* 2 seed in the NCAA Tourney, only to have MSU play a ******* defacto home game. A 2 seed? With that record and success in-conference? NCAA effed over ISU that year.

Total bull.

Ok, I'm done, this thread is ticking me off.

The fact that you get a redo on the play doesn't mean that it would automatically end up differently. For that reason I wouldn't go with the 2 point conversion attempt in the Nebraska game, as the outcome would still likely be the same. So I'd go with a redo of the play that Niang broke his foot. I think if that play is ran again, there is a good chance he doesn't break it, then who knows going forward.

I'd re-do that final TD run against Florida State - everyone in the stadium saw it except for the ref (including Bobby Bowden). Would be nice if the second time around, the zebra could see it as well. Not that it would have likely made a difference in the team's collapse the second half of that season, but that would have been a nice feather in the cap for Dan McCarney and the program.

If I could choose a play from that season, it would be a re-do of whatever butterfly flapped its wings in Tokyo and caused that monsoon in Norman for the OU game. I think with a dry field and a dry football, Seneca Wallace would have given us a much better game that day.

Because I am younger than most here, the first real kick to the groin that I can remember experience and actually caring about was the fake extra point against Nebraska. For basketball, I would say the game Niang broke his foot. That team had a chance to go deep in that tournament

No brainers for me:

Blarge for basketball. Changing that would likely have led to a national title.

'04 Missouri missed FG that would have sent us to the Big 12 title game.

Lots of others that have been mentioned but none bigger that the two above.

I wouldn't have redone the play. I'd only want the ref to make the correct call. Seneca endzone dive against FSU. He was in...

That game was one of my most favorite ISU events to attend. What a game.

That said, if Seneca is in - we still have to kick the extra point for OT or go for 2. A win was still likely less than 50% likely.

And even though the refs ruled him out, we still had one more play: 1st and goal. We tried to run an option against Florida State's fast DL and it got smoked out immediately. I would have liked to have seen something a little less predictable there.

While the Missouri game in 04 was heart-breaking, the KU game in 05 stands out as worse to me for several reasons:
  • The fact that we were in basically exactly the same position as the year before, and learned nothing from it.
  • The fact that KU was playing their third-string QB in the 4th quarter during their comeback.
  • Two replays were overturned against us that basically resulted in a 14-point swing: 1) Blythe caught a sideline pass and tightroped over the pylon; called a TD on the field, overturned by replay; I think we punted, and 2) Our defense made a 4th-and-goal stop, but replay overturned it and gave KU the touchdown.

Shaggy's missed FG in that game was in the first OT and wouldn't have won the game outright; the way we had been playing in the 4th quarter, KU probably would have scored the winning TD on their next possession, anyway.

Football: 2005 KU game, Shaggy makes the GW FG.

Basketball: 2014 North Carolina Central, Niang doesn't break his foot.

Those are two of the three worst sports moments of my life, the other being Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS.
But just think, that guy got a great souvenir... Sorry Reds fan. Go ahead, let me have it. :D

2009 K-State game at Arrowhead. Score TD with 0:30 left in 4Q and then have PAT blocked that would have tied game...

Remember my wife asking why I was so stressed as we lined up for the PAT since it should be a gimme for OT. Now she understands that nothing is a given for ISU fans until the clock reads 0:00
That block should have been flagged. It was a textbook case of leverage as Lamur pushed off of a teammate to get high enough for the block.

No defensive player, in an attempt to block, bat or catch a kick, may:
  1. Step, jump or stand on a teammate.
  2. Place a hand(s) on a teammate to get leverage for additional height.
  3. Be picked up by a teammate, or be elevated, propelled or pushed.
