Oklahoma 73–71 Iowa State. Wayman Tisdale assaults Sam Hill within the last seconds of the game and the ref's of course call Hill for the foul.

Excellent candidate for this topic. What a sham that call was.

(Edit, I had put "I was there," but i was confusing it with a game I had seen at Hilton, with similar foul — which also may have involved Tisdale.)

Super downer but I don't think winning the B12 North either of those years we were one missed play away changes anything with the program. The division was really down and we likely just get annihilated in the title game.

That observation does have some merit, maybe neither would've been a needle-mover, long-term. I've long thought ISU wouldn't have gotten crushed by UT as badly as CU did, but no way to know. Worst-case, Iowa State would have a division title or 2 division titles in the record books.

Hill fouled out with about a minute and a half left, which is likely the play you describe. OU was up 2. Missed the FT, Tisdale rebound (fouled), makes both, OU up 4. ISU misses a shot, OU rebound, foul, 2 more FT to put Sooners up 6. Then ISU made two buckets in the final :20 for the 73-71 margin.

IMO, the more egregious whistle was Woody Mayfield's "travel" call on Hill that ended the '86 championship. Mayfield overruled Ron Spitler, who had called a foul on Danny Manning. Hill should have been at the line with a chance to send the game into OT.

For me its either Craft or Cleaves falling on their face. In football I want to make one of Shaggy's field goals to go to the CCG.

Since we’re indulging our misery in this thread, here’s a video summary of that game (from OU perspective):

ISU 7, Oklahoma 7
(1981)

Despite the outcome, amusing for 3 reasons:
(1) Classic early-80s game-recap, complete with holdover-‘70s music!
(2) Narrator refers to “Iowa State quarterback Jeff Quinn.” I chuckled.
(3) Crutchfield with midriff-bearing tear-away jersey.
Those helmets!
