You want to know the truth behind the "superbowl" excuse? Hayden Fry treated the ISU game as the most important game of the year (Don't defend it Hawk trolls, you know it's true). He knew that beating the living crap out of ISU meant they would never compete against ISU for in-state recruits. Dan McCarney coached under Hayden Fry and likely bought into the same philosophy. When McCarney went to ISU, he used the same philosophy but reversed it against Iowa. So yes, I will give Hawk fans that the Iowa game meant more to ISU in the McCarney years. Any time since McCarney left, if Iowa fans makes the "it's ISU's superbowl" excuse it is just a lazy and convenient way to protect their precious Hawkeyes.

Who did Ferentz cut his teeth under?

It has become a real sore point game for a lot of Iowa fans, because they are always sure that Iowa is light years better than ISU, which obviously is not always the case. DMac always made the game a top priority, but Cizik, and CPR treated it as just another game. Campbell definitely is more concerned about what his team is doing than what any other team is doing. He understands that if you get better, winning games, even the Iowa game will happen. There is no secret super power that ISU congers up for this week. The main reason that ISU sometimes tanked after beating a decent Iowa team is decades of teams with no depth. Once 5 or 6 starters get hurt or dinged up the quality of the team goes down fast.

Most of the years in which ISU finished worse than Iowa after beating Iowa were also years where ISU was playing the tougher side of the old Big 12 rotation/9 game conference slate, while Iowa missed OSU or Michigan.

Sorry that was part 2. He has a little Hayden Fry in him too. Remember he put up pictures of ISU beating Iowa in 2011 in the lockeroom the week leading up 2012 game.

That's true. Once upon a time, someone put together a chart analyzing the years that ISU won and their respective Sagarin year-end rankings. With very few exceptions, the years ISU defeated Iowa were also years where their year-end ranking in Sagarin was superior to Iowa's. I don't have time to go looking for it, sorry.

The whole super bowl thing is so ******* stupid. Is it the most important game of the season for either team...no, but the players and fans get more amped up for it than most games. It's a rivalry game. It's played in a bubble. It matters to everybody regardless of how rest of the season goes. Whether it's so you can talk **** or just ensure that you don't have to listen to opposing fans gloat the game is always going to be pretty high up on the the want to win list every year for both fan bases.

Here's some facts on the Cy-Hawk game for all the "Super Bowl" mofo's out there in the black and gold.

In years when ISU is bad and Iowa is mediocre to good, Iowa typically wins.
In years when ISU goes to a bowl game, ISU typically beats Iowa. Iowa has been typically mediocre-ish in those years. As in a 7-5 Iowa team....which based on their typical Big 10 schedule, does not reflect a juggernaut team.

So the moral of the story is that this game often predicts whether ISU will be decent or not based on them winning or losing.

In series history, if ISU beats Iowa they go on to have a season that is as good as or better than Iowa does, minus 2001. That is something the media in this state will never tell you.

Jim Zabble couldn't stand ISU beating Iowa and came up with that excuse, years ago. Him and Miller would sit on Soundoff after the game and say ISU's Super Bowl over and over again.

The funny thing is Iowa fans throw the Super Bowl comment around when getting beat by Big 10 teams as well. Or that team always gets up more for Iowa than any other team..

The thing that is weird this year I am seeing a lot of media in the state saying this game doesn't matter as much to Iowa or it fans, as it does to ISU. Looking at comments out of the football offices in Iowa City say different.

To be fair, Iowa fans only know so many words. That makes it very difficult to come up with more excuses.

Every time a Hawk fan friend spouts off the Super Bowl comment, I say the same thing: I'll concede the late 90s/early 00s for it. Back then it was a more important game because making the Iowa series competitive again was a necessary step to rebuild our program. Nowadays it has been replaced by the need to do better in conference play. But they still won't let it go because it makes them feel better about themselves.

Fun fact: I watched the 2013 CyHawk basketball game with one of said friends, and he tried to pull the "most important game" card. For the basketball game. And still stuck to his guns even after I spent a good 10 minutes explaining the nuances of Kansas and Big 12 basketball to him.

This is correct. Fry used to be very open about how the ISU game was by far the most important game of the season. He would say that in a place like Iowa to be successful you have to absolutely dominate in-state recruiting, and that was his top recruiting priority. Despite all the guys he woukd get from Texas the core of the team was still Iowa guys. That's also why he would never let up and pour it on. He wanted to make it like Nebraska where Iowa kids would turn down a scholarship at ISU and elsewhere to walk on at Iowa.

I can assure you that most Iowa fans don't think Iowa is "light years" ahead of ISU. Thinking that is just plain ludicrous.

Bottom line- this 40-year series has long since run its course. It is now just a focal point for angry feelings and mud-slinging.
It needs to end..
