My in-laws asked me this weekend when he was jumping ship to a bigger/better gig. I could be just trying to convince myself, but I said I really do believe him when he says he wants to build something at Iowa State. So, I believe we have him for another two seasons at least.

I also think his contract is redone before the bowl game.

If he doesn’t up his contract this season I agree he is just letting the buyout drop until someone can afford it and will be gone. Like everyone else I’m trying to convince myself he wants to be here, but these guys are so competitive they want to move up. Regardless I’ll be happy with what he’s given this program.

Give him whatever he wants. Game day just said TN went after him but the buyout scares them away.

Just make the buyout $20mm and keep other schools away!

Game day just said Tennessee call Coach Cambell but couldn't figure out a way around his massive buyout! Score one for the good guys...

Not what was said. Said Tennessee “backed off” Campbell, which means he was on their want-list, but not necessarily that they called him or even went after him beyond that.

I hear that as the buyout worked to prevent any serious discussions.

The silence on the extension front is deafening. And I don't think it's because JP isn't trying judging from some of his subtle comments. Very worried about Tennesse at this point. The SEC option of the Midwest. Hopefully this is just unfounded concern and CMC doesn't want to talk contract during the season.
He doesn't even have an agent

This coaching staff is doing something we have never had at Iowa State. Recruiting, solid coaching, and for the first time in my 40 years......Iowa State was in a position to win every game they played in this year. Had some good teams in the past 15 years, but you put them up against a top 5 team on the road and they still get beat by 20+ points.

Have to keep that buyout to a point of being a non-discussion.

What Campbell has been able to do in 24 months is remarkable. It’s to the point my Hawk friends say they would rather watch IsU play than the Hawks.

I get your point but wouldn't Missouri be the SEC option of the Midwest? And fortunately CMC already turned them down to take the ISU job.

All I know is that if JP allows Campbell to walk away without offering him everything he can possibly afford, JP's time here should end.... and I really like JP. Football is EVERYTHING for an Athletic Department. You can understand not handing Cael everything he wanted, because Wrestling doesn't even make money. But you let Campbell walk without practically breaking your bank account, then you get what you deserve.

With all that being said, I sincerely hope Campbell lives by the same words he preaches to his players. He always talks to them about today's society being selfish and wanting instant gratification and not wanting to work and take the long road needed. So if he up and leaves after this season, IMO, he's not a man of character and has been lying to his team all season. Sounds harsh, but it's true.

If I'm David Montgomery and Campbell up and leaves after this season, I walk into Campbell's office and say... "hey coach, so you've decided to be selfish and just go for instant gratification and leave us all behind, huh? Ok, so you've just been all talk this season, but you don't live up to your own words yourself? Got it."

JP will renegotiate when the time is right. I also think it will be after this game.

I also feel that there is some truth to Campbell's word when he took this job, that he could retire in Ames.

Give him another extension for a year, bump up to 2.75 mil plus incentives and a raise for coaching staff. Thus keeping the buyout at 9-10mil for another year. If he is successful next year. Pay him the bank, 3.5 mil which would put him in the upper half of the XII.

Midwest recruiting is basically Ohio. Tennessee is pretty close to Ohio. So it. Would make sense, though I'm glad he turned it down.

You guys act like increasing the contract buy out happens in a vacuum. Coach has to agree to it as well.

We'll know a lot more once the details of his new contract come out. Pay raise? Of course, good and deserved. Lower buy out? Not good for ISU in my opinion.

We'll get an indication of his thought process if the buy out goes down, despite a raise.

Raise season ticket prices slightly. If they wanted to give CMC a 1.2 mil raise (just a number I picked) at the rate they sold season tickets this year it would average 25.00 per season ticket.

Just hoping he's not given a 10 year deal. Add a year to his contract, give him a raise, and see how it goes the next couple of years.

You really just have to look at the overall number in that case.

A 10 year deal makes sense if it means we get a cheaper per year rate. People hated the Rhoads 10 year deal, but at the time he got the extension he was in demand and his per year rate wouldve been higher had he jumped ship. We likely paid no more than if we'd offered him a shorter term but higher rate contract, and if things had worked out we would have saved money on the deal.

Long term deals need to have larger buyout. If they don't, if it does playout with performance, we can't get rid of him and if he does well, we don't have leverage to keep him.

I like the way the current contract has been worked out and I hope future contracts are similar in nature

Completely agree. The best shot to truly turn the program around is to lock Campbell in long term. I would love to see a 10 year deal at $4 million+ per year. Ideally with the same buyout language that would require another school to pay the full amount of the remaining contract. These opportunities don’t come around very often.
