Any shot Penn State fans want to take at anyone's character has zero merit since they've affirmed time and again that having a good football program is more important than the safety of children.
So tempted to make a lewd joke against Penn st but I'll keep it classy

I'm hoping mine didn't come off as a joke about it. They literally have no credibility in my eyes when it comes to character. Standing ovation for a guy that allowed that **** to happen for years. Protested the removal of his statue. I hate them and their fans as much as I do Baylor.

this is on Campbell...if he’d asked Lanning to snap, hold, and kick fieldgoals, JL would’ve won this award.

No offense but they are sports journalists. We play in a power 5 conference. We were ranked for several weeks. They all should know Iowa State.
With all due respect to the sports journalists in our local area, I don't have much respect for sports journalists' opinions on a national level. Just look at the regional voting in a Heisman race. They get these votes wrong all of the time. We are in a flyover state in a flyover conference.

Selection Criteria
To be eligible, during the selection process a candidate must be in good standing and eligible on his team, eligible with the NCAA and play significant time during most or all of the season. Decisions regarding student-athlete status for the Award will be made by the LSC staff and Advisory Committee. In addition to starting or playing significant downs on offense or defense, candidates will be measured by performance from among one or more of the following:

  • Play multiple positions on offense and/or multiple positions on defense
  • Start as a position player on offense or defense and play a significant role on special teams
  • Perform as a two-way player who starts either on offense or defense, and is used on the other side of the ball in some meaningful capacity
  • Demonstrate an extreme, high-level of versatility at one position on a regular basis during the course of the season
  • Make a significant impact during big games such as scoring, big plays, productivity, etc.
  • Elevate the team’s performance through leadership displayed by excelling in multiple roles at one or more positions

A panel of college football experts will develop an Official Watch List with names added to the list as the season progresses based upon player performance. Selection Committee members will vote for Finalists using a 5-3-1 point system (1st place – 5 points; 2nd place – 3 points; 3rd place – 1 point). A designated number of players with the most points comprises the Finalist List.

Selection Committee members select their top three from the finalist pool, ranked in order 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place. The 5-3-1 point system will be used to determine the winner.

Fan voting accounts for the 17th vote (approximately 6 percent of the overall votes) using the 5-3-1 point system.

The public accounting firm Dean Dorton tabulates the votes for the Finalists and Award winner. Selection Committee voting is conducted via email. Fan voting is conducted online at www.votepaulhornung.com. No member of the LSC board, staff or Hornung Award Advisory Committee will receive or tabulate votes.

god, Penn State fans are idiots. this guy at least tries to respond with petty humor (and if i were a Hawk fan i'm sure i'd laugh), although he could at least have the goddamn common courtesy to give Joel credit for being well above average at LB.

Wow ... he is from pedo state ... and he is throwing stones at a kid with an undisclosed heath issue ... guess I shouldn't be surprised ... no class

Joel played on OFFENSE and DEFENSE. He had over 100 rushing yards and 100 tackles, ran and passed for TD's, 10 TFL's - He played on both sides of the ball! Barkley played Offense and within the expected norms of the RB position - yes returning kicks is a normal part of the RB position. From the Hornung Award website -

"The essence of the Award – versatility enabling a player to make an impact at numerous positions on the field..."

Joel Lanning is the Essence of what this award claims it is for. Kind of wish I’d never have heard of the award because it isn’t legitimate and as others have noted a joke.

Didn't even have JL punt and be the gunner on the same play the entire season.

I hope Pollard knows what he's doing.

Why do NFL analysts get a vote? Phil Simms getting a vote is a red flag.

It’s similar to saying Kirk Herbstreit should vote for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year

Seems to me like Joel Lanning would be on the short list of players most eligible for this award in the last 10 years (probably more), not just this year.

I hope someone comes up with an award that truly honors a player who does what he did. Maybe the best we can get now is an ESPY for "most compelling story" or something.

Lanning also played upback on special teams. I'm not sure how you can get any more versatile than playing every side of the ball. Similar to the Cousy Award with Monte this is another highway robbery.
