Well if you think this sucks you should have been there when Troy Davis ran for back to back 2000 yard seasons and was also the Big XII leading rusher yet got beat out for the Doak Walker award by Byron Hanspard of TTU.

and came in second for the Heisman to Danny Wuerffel in 1996. Yeah...

Hot take alert. The Lanning Hype was way overblown.

I agree that Lanning's play as a LB was occasionally overblown. He's a solid linebacker who definitely benefited from a much-improved line and had some very obvious deficiencies. However, I think that only slightly discredits him for this award. He still did something absolutely unprecedented and was able to play in all facets of the game at an above-average level. I don't understand how Barkley was possibly a better candidate for this award.

I just think it is a case of someone being great at mutliple things. Lanning was good, but he wasn't great at being a QB or a great LB. Barkley was great at running, catching and in the return game.

Right. It was never about being the best. It was about being thd most versatile. That’s what Joel is.

god, Penn State fans are idiots. this guy at least tries to respond with petty humor (and if i were a Hawk fan i'm sure i'd laugh), although he could at least have the goddamn common courtesy to give Joel credit for being well above average at LB.

So Barkley was great at running, catching and running again?

And yet he was a key player in a win against a better team than penn state played.

Any shot Penn State fans want to take at anyone's character has zero merit since they've affirmed time and again that having a good football program is more important than the safety of children.

He can play RB AND return kicks!?! So versatile, that's never been done 1,000 different times before.

Selection Criteria
To be eligible, during the selection process a candidate must be in good standing and eligible on his team, eligible with the NCAA and play significant time during most or all of the season. Decisions regarding student-athlete status for the Award will be made by the LSC staff and Advisory Committee. In addition to starting or playing significant downs on offense or defense, candidates will be measured by performance from among one or more of the following:

  • Play multiple positions on offense and/or multiple positions on defense
  • Start as a position player on offense or defense and play a significant role on special teams
  • Perform as a two-way player who starts either on offense or defense, and is used on the other side of the ball in some meaningful capacity
  • Demonstrate an extreme, high-level of versatility at one position on a regular basis during the course of the season
  • Make a significant impact during big games such as scoring, big plays, productivity, etc.
  • Elevate the team’s performance through leadership displayed by excelling in multiple roles at one or more positions

A panel of college football experts will develop an Official Watch List with names added to the list as the season progresses based upon player performance. Selection Committee members will vote for Finalists using a 5-3-1 point system (1st place – 5 points; 2nd place – 3 points; 3rd place – 1 point). A designated number of players with the most points comprises the Finalist List.

Selection Committee members select their top three from the finalist pool, ranked in order 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place. The 5-3-1 point system will be used to determine the winner.

Fan voting accounts for the 17th vote (approximately 6 percent of the overall votes) using the 5-3-1 point system.

The public accounting firm Dean Dorton tabulates the votes for the Finalists and Award winner. Selection Committee voting is conducted via email. Fan voting is conducted online at www.votepaulhornung.com. No member of the LSC board, staff or Hornung Award Advisory Committee will receive or tabulate votes.
