Well if you think this sucks you should have been there when Troy Davis ran for back to back 2000 yard seasons and was also the Big XII leading rusher yet got beat out for the Doak Walker award by Byron Hanspard of TTU.
Plus Troy was the first to have back to back 2000 yard seasons.

Yes Lanning should have won. But like most awards, scoring TDs > doing things like converting 3rd downs and shooting a gap for a TFL.

Recent winners include Peppers, McCaffery and OBJ. They like big names. Most of the voters probably haven't even watched Lanning play.

The award was designed to go to the most "Versatile, high-performing" player. No one this year is more versatile than JL. I looked at the previous winners. High-performing, but no where near Lanning's versatility. Guess this is just another meaningless award to give out based on high profile school names or a consolation trophy for not getting some other award. Oh well. Does remind me of the Troy Davis overlook.

It would be one thing if Lanning was a DB or Safety that came in on offense to play WR or RB for a couple of plays. But he played QB! And he threw touchdown passes! And he played special teams!

Hot take alert. The Lanning Hype was way overblown.

I defer to the people in the football world on this. People who have been around college football have repeatedly discussed how difficult it would be to move from QB to MLB, and for the preparation that would go in to playing both in one game. I'll trust their opinion.

No offense but they are sports journalists. We play in a power 5 conference. We were ranked for several weeks. They all should know Iowa State.

I agree that as ISU fans we were exposed to a lot of hype, but that was because the athletics department & Cyclone Football was actively promoting Joel for the award. In my opinion, the attention he got was deserved. Joel did something that was basically unprecedented in recent memory - and he did a dang good job of it.

I'm a big Barkley fan but come on man, being able to be a starting RB and KR is impressive but Lanning literally plays on offense, defense and special team. It doesn't get more versatile than that.
Lanning got robbed one more time as a cyclone. Did us finishing 7-5 hurt his chances of winning this? There was a lot of Lanning hype in October
