Pro Football Focus also says Montgomery is a better RB than Barkley.

I think Montgomery and Barkley are really similar and can see Montgomery winning a ton of awards next year. Especially with several receivers graduating, I think he might be used even more in the passing game next year.

Surely Barkley’s versatility wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. But in all honesty, Joel Lanning simply wasn’t that good. I get that he was a former QB, so to even start at the P5 level for a solid team in his first year at the position is unique. But he threw a couple passes and carried the ball ~30 times (and not particularly effectively, BTW) and he was a below average LB.

I can understand the committee awarding the trophy to a player that was versatile and is really, really good at football, as opposed to a more versatile player who is not nearly as good.

Lanning was good enough to win an award for versatility. They have an award for Barkley, it's called the Doak Walker award.

Just confirms what the tape shows if you watch Iowa State games and focus solely on Lanning. He rarely made positive plays.

Aren't you the guy who said he was terrible against TCU? You know the game where ISU's D had a shutout? Not to be confused with other shutout they had.

So you think Montgomery is better than Barkley?

No, but I think Montgomery is still really good. I am not claiming Pro Football Focus is the only way to determine how good someone is. I am saying that what I saw with my own two eyes is that Lanning wasn’t very good, and PFF tends to agree with me.

Are you talking about on offense or defense? What does the tape say about Barkley's MLB play?

So you will use PFF to determine Lanning's ability but you won't use it to determine Montgomery's? Lol

I am not using it to determine anyone’s ability. I think Lanning isn’t good. PFF agrees. I think Montgomery is really good. PFF also agrees. I am not using PFF to rank players against each other and determine who is better.

Because he is the best RB in the country and one of the best kick returners in the country. He is also probably the best pass catching RB. He won the RB of the year and the returner of the year in the Big Ten. He also passed it half as many times as Lanning did and had the same amount of passing TDs.

Then give him the Doak Walker award for best Running Back.

I agree he had a great season, but not anything that hasn't been done before.

How many tackles did he have? Sacks? TFL?

PFF thinks Montgomery is quite a bit better than Barkley but you don't think Montgomery is better. That is dumb

Lanning deserves an award for best leader in college football. I think one of the most impressive things about the kid is that he went from starting QB to having his job taken away, told he should switch positions, and then just went about learning to be a LB with everything he had. If you want a reason why the team made the cultural turnaround it did and the reason they learned to win games this year... look no further than Lanning.

Lanning's numbers running the ball may not look effective, but nearly all of them were on 3rd/4th and 1-2. 9 guys in the box, and he was never stopped short of a first down in those situations. That's damn effective.
