I don't know if I'd call beating a #13 Iowa while in Kinnick just another mediocre win for any team let alone an FCS team. NDSU has 6 straight FBS wins (5 being P5 teams) and none of them are just flukes. In the win over Iowa, for example, NDSU rushed 239 yards to Iowa's 34 total yards, allowed only 5 of 13 third down conversions, and held the Hawks to 1.4 yards per carry. Remember, this wasn't the same Iowa team we say this year, Iowa was ranked #13 at the time of this game. Additionally, while you can say the success has only been at the FCS level, these games are not exactly close match ups. Over the last 3 season, including this one, the Bison average 35 points per game and hold their opponents to an average of 13 (this season the overage has been 40-10). This average includes all games, including FCS play off games and FBS teams. There's a reason FBS schools don't schedule this team anymore. Also, as far as facilities go, have you seen their facilities. NDSU has numerous, high level training facilities and the only one of them I have a problem with is the football stadium. The Fargo Dome doesn't have a high capacity and is an indoor stadium but this won't matter because they are currently in the process of building a new outdoor stadium that can fit the needs of the FBS level.

You did beat a pretty good team with Iowa. Congratulations. Most of the other teams you beat were mediocre at best and most were at the bottom of their conference. Winning 1 or even 2 FBS games a year is not the same as playing a full FBS schedule with at least 11 FBS teams on it.

And NDSU can spend all the money they have on facilities upgrades and they likely wont compare to Big 12 facilities. What you consider good is not good by Big 12 standards.

Regardless, even if NDSU does complete massive improvements to their facilities, and continues to win at a high rate, the Big 12 and Big 10 are NOT going to come calling. No one is looking to tap into the rich TV territory of North Dakota.
NDSU would be better off trying to get into the MAC or the MWC with Wyoming.

NDSU is a good team. But even the best FCS teams generally struggle when they move to FBS. Some teams that have made the move have regretted it because of all of the money they have to spend to try and compete with the bigger schools in their conference.

North Dakota oil money won't last forever. NDSU should just keep winning FCS championships and be happy with what they have.

The SMALLEST stadium int he Big 12 is TCU with 45000 seats. That's more than twice the size of NDSUs stadium. Unless they plan to more than double their stadium size, I don't think they will belong in the Big12.

I completely agree that a game or two against an FBS team is different than a full schedule and they may struggle at first. However, NDSU has proven to produce some top notch players. Between 2014 and 2016, they had 4 players get drafted into the NFL including the 2nd pick of the 2016 draft, Eagles star quarter back Carson Wentz who has lead Phili to an amazing season so far. Clearly they have been able to pick up some good recruits and develop the players very well and this has all been done while in the FCS. Think now about how much more attractive they will appear to recruits being FBS and in a P5 conference. Also, they will receive more money for things like facilities by joining the Big 12. So just imagine what they'll be able to do when they can bring in new and better recruits, afford better training facilities, and all the other resources that come with being in the Big 12. As for the TV thing, I know that from a distance Fargo, North Dakota, doesn't seem like a very attractive spot for TV but then again how attractive does Ames, Iowa seem from a distance. College Game Day has even gone to Fargo because of all of the success had by the team and the loyal fan base. Also, think how much competition would there be for TV stations in Fargo, its open and free territory. Back to the jumping up in levels thing, you have to remember how short NDSU has been DI. It actually wasn't until 2004 that they left DII and in just 13 years they already have huge amounts of success. I'd also like to quickly bring up other sports. NDSU has a winning record in basketball, baseball, wrestling, and has very successful cross country and track teams. Because ISU has no baseball team, the Big 12 has just 9 baseball team and NDSU could fill in to make it 10. The wrestling team is actually an affiliate of the Big 12 and finished 4th in the conference this past season. Remember all of these teams also weren't DI until 2014 and have very good success already. Now I do agree that it may be smart for NDSU to just go G5 for now just so that they are more prepared to face P5 teams but this thread is about which team would be best for the Big 12, and given the location and other options, I feel that they are the best option.

Ok, first things first. Paragraphs are your friend.

Secondly, what you could do with Big 12 money would likely have no effect on the decision. What revenue you are creating right now does. If NDSU were to move to FBS and do very well in the MAC or MWC, then I could see the Big 12 being a possibility some day. Right now the difference between the G5 and the P5 is bigger than I think you realize.

Fargo vs Ames is not the comparison that needs to be made. The state of Iowa vs the state of North Dakota, 3.14 MILLION vs 758 THOUSAND is a lot more relevant.

The Big 12 is more likely to go after a Memphis or Cincinnati that would actually bring TV sets to the conference, currently have athletic revenues higher than NDSU, and currently have non football sports that compete in major conferences.

NDSU is NOT the best fit for the Big 12 unless all you look at is geography. I really hope they can move to the FBS some time soon. But when they do, you will see that the FBS is harder than the FCS. Period.

Trade WV to the Big 10 in exchange for Nebraska. Both teams get to play regional rivals again. Nebraska enjoys getting to play Okie again every year.

Win win in my opinion.

Louisville publicly begged to be in the Big 12 and we said no before the ACC took them. Unless something radically changes since we passed I doubt we expand for Cincy or Memphis. If I were in charge of the Big 12 we'd probably have the original 8 members of B12 still here, Cincy, Louisville, WVU and BYU. BYU probably would have been a mistake by me and TCU/Memphis probably better but I can't lie that's the four I wanted who were available.
The smartest move by the B12 was not inviting Louisville:

And stay the hell away from other commuter schools like Cincy, Memphis, UCF, USF and Houston.

Why’s that? Because their basketball program funneled money to a recruit? The list of schools that have that in their history but the Big 12 would kill for is long.

Well done, Jurich. One of the best AD jobs in modern college athletics.

If you think many of today’s premium brands weren’t built in a similar fashion in past decades, you’re being naive.

Ames has Des Moines next door. While not a huge city, it's whole population with subs is close to the state of ND. TCU went to 45K because that is around big XII minimum, better tear down your stadium and build something like what the Vikings have because the Texas schools think Ames is too cold, wait til they walk onto the field at Fargo, turns around and go back inside.

Football, and MBB just a little, is what conferences care about. Way different jumping from II to AA to AA to full I.

Conferences also look at recruiting areas. Iowa doesn't produce enough DI recruits so I doubt ND does.

Oh I know. He just made a silly comparison between Fargo and Ames, which obviously doesn't matter. So I set him straight that it's a lot more than just the city that the University resides in that matters.

I think the expansion conversation is dead, for now. I was all aboard the expansion talk, and plenty disappointed with the decision to stand pat at 10 teams.

However, I've changed my stance in the last year. While it is important to learn from the past, it is equally important to prepare for the next battle, not the previous one. The last realignment was driven not based on success on the field, not by history or geography or fanbase engagement. The last round was driven by cable subscribers and that alone. There's no other argument for why the Big10 added Maryland and Rutgers other than to foist the Big10 network onto largely indifferent cable subscribers from DC to New York. The Big10 got a couple bucks from every cable subscriptions, but not necessarily viewers.

The media landscape is going to be different than it is today when the current Grant of Rights and TV deal both come up in 2024. How, exactly, it’s hard to say, but here are a few guesses:
  • Fewer traditional media outlets bidding on the next TV contract. Disney/ABC/ESPN’s purchase of 21st Century Fox including Fox Sports Net all but ensures this.
  • The overall % of general cable subscribers will continue to fall as a la carte options expand.
  • Targeted marketing will develop into new areas. Instead of just ads on the side of your browser, the commercials you see during a TV broadcast will be target to you individually - not everyone sees the same commercials.
What will this mean? First, I think ESPN’s woes are tied to over-paying for their TV deals last time around. Second, viewing audiences will continue to splinter. Third, the current Big10/SEC Network models won’t be durable long term as the successful models will shift from a few bucks from every cable bill to selling targeted ad time.

What effect will this have on college football? Well, it’s really complicated. I think the prioritization of actual viewers could lead more programs to go independent and open their own streaming channel, but that leaves the question of how they would handle all their other sports. There’s also the question of who jumps first. I think Notre Dame or BYU could be the first to go in this direction as their already independent and have worked out solutions for the non-revenue sports. Once a couple go, the dominoes will fall.

If this comes to pass, the conferences start to lose programs to independence rather than another conference.
SEC: Alabama, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Georgia, A&M
ACC: Maybe Florida State and Clemson
Big10: Penn St, Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska (delusionally)
Big12: Texas, maybe Oklahoma but probably not.
Pac12: USC, maybe Washington.

Schools with smaller fanbases will remain in conferences and can band together to package their programming together. Geographical footprints will shrink to reduce travel costs for non-revenue sports. If the Big 12 needs a team or two to even out, there will still be plenty of options.

Part of NDSU's success has been being the UNI to U of Minnesota. They get their foot in the door with many recruits who don't get a look or an offer from the U. When they need a whole roster of recruits that can play in a top conference they may struggle (likely) or they may start hurting the U of M (less likely IMO).

This is a stupid conversation. Big 12 is adding no one, especially a FCS team

Nailed it.

Nothing will happen until 2023/2024 so its all jib jab right now.

Unless the Big 12 realizes something is going to happen a couple years before 23/24 and has to make a move to save the conference but I don't think that will happen either.

You obviously did not read or comprehend the linked article. Jurich's financial shenanigans are unprecedented (in a bad way) for an AD and were criminal. Glad the B12 stayed the hell away from Louisville and the other commuter schools.
