Just great...my wife has now declared herself a flat-earther and is demanding that I fly her to various destinations like Paris, Sydney, Rio De Janeiro, and Honolulu twice, once going the "short" way, and then "taking the long way around" to prove my position that the Earth is round...

I just figured this was one of those things that make you the ultimate hipster. Similar to drinking Old Style. You know it sucks, but you can't help but be different. That's how I look at this. They know it isn't true, but they can't help themselves but be the contrarian to everything, so this is the top of the mountain to them.

Although, it's gotten big enough of a push, that I think that it's become a, "How do I make money off of really dumb people without actually doing anything illegal? Oh, I'll throw this flat earth thing out there, if anyone responds, I know I've found my base of true idiots and I can milk them for a ton of money."

This is definitely in the realm of stupid or liar. You are either too stupid to realize how idiotic this theory is, or you are lying about believing in it.

This same principle could be applied to some religious leaders.

In my experience with flat earthers, they share some territory with the extreme far right, born again movement. Take evangelicals and multiply the crazy by 100. Throw in a little mental slowness, a dash of Ron Paul and mix with Alex Jones. That's your typical flat earther.

None of this is serious, is it?

Never underestimate how serious some of these people are.

When I printed checks, one order came through for a group called "Destroy the Sun."
Most Google search results for that come back like it's just college kids goofing around, but there's someone serious enough to make a group that needs checks and apparently has enough money to write one or more.

My operating theory is that all stupid things on the internet start as jokes/CJ's, but sometimes they grow to the point where they are co-opted by real people and it turns into a real thing.

I met a flat Earther. He has all this crazy crap that he spews but it's all related to religion. Like there's a dome over the Earth, so that God can look down on us. There's a 300 foot wall in Antarctica that marks the edge of the world. Science is Satan deceiving us. Not only that he says that its a flat disk that sits at 23.4 degrees which if you subtract it from 90 it's 66.6!!!! You can't make this stuff up.

This one is hilarious because it's so easily disproven... but they always fall back to "those are faked" silly government conspiracies.

You'd think eventually one of these folks would walk to the edge of the Earth and get a nice picture to prove their position....

I wouldn't put Kyrie Irving or Shaq with those types of people. They're Flat Earthers.

Flat Earthers are just another wacky group of conspiracy theorists. They come from all over the political spectrum.

I watched a documentary on television a while back about that wall. It's an integral part of the world. There's actually an entire crew of men who watch the wall, and guard us from what's on the other side.

There's some debate about what caused it, but scientists say that the wall is crumbling and bad things are headed our way.
