I think Bruce Weber does more with less than anyone in the conference. Having said that he sucks at recruiting and runs a lot of guys off which is why he usually has less. I can't stand the guy but he usually get's a lot out of whatever roster he has.
In some ways he sucks at recruiting, in other ways he consistently has some good P5 players that few P5s valued highly.

Most of Weber's play has been at Power5 Illinois and K-State. Most of Prohm's in the OVC. 64% of his wins came in the Ohio Valley to be precise. And I'm not saying Prohm isn't a solid perhaps elite coach. But his record to this point in time isn't sufficient to make a judgment. Presently, he's playing with his guys as is Weber.
Actually 54 of his 163 wins or 33% of his wins came against Ohio Valley competition. But that is just regular season games - not including conference tournaments so maybe it is closer to 35%. Regardless, there is a lot more there than Ohio Valley success.

That doesn't change the fact that you continue to use numbers that are misrepresented.

Weber playing with all his own. Drew with all his. Lonnie and Hugs with theirs.

That aside, I knew it would turn into this, sadly, but that aside, we at least agree on the top couple guys, which are hard to argue, I guess. Maybe, I should have stopped at two or three.

  1. Bill Self - has his weakest in first place tie
  2. Bob Huggins - ugly but effective
  3. Lon Kruger - history makes this case
  4. Scott Drew - maybe a slot too low due to his ability to develop talent
  5. Bruce Weber - overachieving/only coach not named Self with a conference title
  6. Chris Beard - first place but it's early in his career
  7. Jamie Dixon - underachieving
  8. Steve Prohm - sweet personality/won with the other dude's recruits
  9. Shaka Smart - should have stayed in Richmond, VA
  10. Mike Boynton - maybe a slot too low
Weber sucks. Ksu and non ksu fans both agree

Well granted, Cult of Frank fans never liked Weber because Martin was their daddy. But most K-State fans - beyond those - are supportive and like this team very much. The hurdle this year is finishing top half and making the NCAA tournament. Looks like he's on that path with this squad even after losing his point guard.

Whar Rick Barnes?

Seriously though, not sure Shaka is an upgrade and from what Barnes has Tennessee doing he clearly isn't.

Most ISU fans couldn't care less about KSU, yet you like to think we do...

WTH, I said that above.

But set that aside, do you believe ISU is better than K-State today or next season when the Cats return the entire roster?

Returning an entire roster of players that have hit their ceiling already and are .500 in league play doesn't equate to being 15-3 the following year.

I think Kstste is better right now, I think Iowa St has a much higher ceiling next year and beyond. If finishing .500 and playing in the 8/9 game in the tourney is good enough then I would say Weber is doing a decent job.

Weber's won championships with recruits of others, yes. But others didn't recruit Marcus Foster, Wes Iwundu or Dean Wade.
Almost every coach in the conference has managed to recruit three really good players in the last 6 years. It's hilarious how overvalued Weber is by K-State fans. And even more hilarious that one of the players you tout as a sign of Weber being a good coach (Foster) hated Weber so much that he transferred out of the program after one season. One shared conference title has basically bought him a hall pass forever.

Tuco I usually have your back and think you've got 20x the basketball intelligence than Surly, but how do you have Beard so high?

An argument can be made based off career results, so I won't even question that. Beard 4th over Drew and Dixon is laughable.
It’s uncommon, but these lists have a look forward aspect and isn’t just a career results list. Career accomplishments from different situations definitely are an input, but at one point Bill Self was just the new coach at Tulsa and it would have seemed laughable to have him near the top of this group.

Dixon is clearly a good coach, I would have him ahead, but Beard inherited a far worse situation in TT. To have Beard and Dixon at 4 and 5 respectively isn’t really saying much.

new rankings would have Beard at 5, Weber at 6, Dixon at 7, Prohm at 8

7-9 are the toughest to rank. 5-6 is basically a tie.
