Before he became known for overacting and being kind of insane, Nic Cage was a likeable protagonist in Valley Girl. I haven't seen the movie in years and I'm sure it didn't age well but teenage JCyclonee thought he created a great character.

And he still looks the same. I hate him. No. I am not jealous. He was also in "Growing Pains".
Are we limited to actors whobecame higher-profile after the debut/early role?
Hard to say, some of these are first roles and a few are early breakout roles.Good example. I thought about that one, but didn't know if it'd qualify, he had a few other movies prior to that (although Grape was the first one I remember)
I think that it should be breakout films. First Roles and Breakout Roles are rarely one in the same. There are obviously some outliers, though.Hard to say, some of these are first roles and a few are early breakout roles.
I was going to mention Gary Oldman in Sid and Nancy. While not his first acting job it certainly was a breakout role for him.

Macy was actually in Boogie Nights. Probably Mark Wahlberg's breakout role. Also Heather Graham, and John C. Reilly.A bit older
William H Macy - Fargo
Viola Davis - Doubt
Jeremy Renner - The Hurt Locker
Norton and Portman were on my list as well

Ben Affleck in Dazed and Confused. So classic. One could also argue that Matthew McConnaughey launched in this movie as well.
