Unfortunately no reason to think it will improve dramatically. Just got destroyed by an average team.

Not sure what game you were watching, thinking we got destroyed.

I guess this is why I stick around for the meltdown - because the variety of meltdown is amusing. One person is upset because we should have won the game, the next person says we got blown out - by 10.

Ah yes, football season is back and the whining begins.

For me, the biggest message today was that missing our first game was a bigger deal than I thought, for both the players and the coaches. That is why most Power 5 teams schedule cream puffs to start the season. Practices can only achieve so much, and the competition is too tough to go up against a team of Iowa's calibre with only practices to prepare. Ask Nebraska!

That’s why some of us were so upset about the game being cancelled.

Credit to both teams. I'm really trying to decifer it all, but it seemed like the botched punts took any kind of momentum out of our sails. Everything after that just snowballed. The D played their guts out and any question marks surrounding Mike Rose getting the start should be silenced. He was playing HS ball last year and he was all over the damn place today.
Think we don’t pussyfoot around 1st & goal on the one yard line & push that ****** in & not botch those punts & this is an entirely different game.

As "mediocre" as everyone is claiming Iowa to be, that's probably the best defense we play all year. Unfortunately - and I don't know why - we called plays right into the teeth of their defense. Not to mention we played that defense in the first game of the season.

For all those disagreeing with my post - exactly which defense are we going to face that was better than the one we played today?

Iowa is a Big 10 team - defense is what they do.

ISU is a Big 12 team - offense is what we do; and we might have the best defense in our conference.

We really didn’t attempt to attack their weaknesses. We tried to outmatch them where they are strongest. Think that’s a losing strategy in today’s matchup & most of the time

No, there's plenty of winnable games left.

Starts with the coach taking ownership.

Positive is Iowa fans cannot in any way say ISU played above their talent today.
Never said the games were unwinnable. Just pointing out that the talent level only goes up from here so, no, there is not a lot of time to make major adjustments. I would think last year proved that all of our games are winnable and I wouldn't have to make that obvious in posts.

Never post here but 2 things

1. The Rose kid is a stud. He’s a future all American. Truly amazing performance. 1A Your defense is very good. Will keep you in every game.

2) Hawks defense is rock solid. Might be the best D of the KF era and I certainly wasn’t predicting that preseason so if I’m a Cyclone fan I’m not throwing your offense under the bus just yet
Don’t get too excited about your defense. I dont think they are close to the best under the KF era. You caught a break with us playing game one on the road while you played the previous week.

I appreciate the rational response. It's rare on a night like tonight. I just don't think you response invalidates my opinion that this was probably the best defense we play all year, even if their defense has weaknesses

Good thing we didn't play it Sunday, cause you know the coaches said it would have thrown off the preparation schedule the following week. Takes a lot of prep work to run DM up the middle for 2 yards for 4 full quarters.

I’m interested where I’m missing the point.

Everybody playing today has played at least 4 to 6 years of football.

Every coach coaching today has coached many many years of football.

Why do people say the playcalling will improve in game 2? Based on the fact for 60 minutes of football we couldn’t figure out what wasn’t working?

You can’t understand during the game that what isn’t working needs to change and you can’t try to call different plays and you have to wait until the next week to fix it?

Wow!

If CMC is going to turn our offense into what KF does at Iowa...... I'm out. I'd rather watch paint dry or my grass grow than watch that garbage.

Like someone already mentioned..... the play we ran to get our 55 yd TD a week ago..... we never even saw it today once. Never even tried to spread Iowa out sideline to sideline.... EVER.

Agree. I like our chances a lot more getting DM, Milton and Jones the ball behind Butler, Eaton and Allen blocking then running DM up the middle.

Two really good defenses. Ultimately, Iowa’s offense was able to make a couple more key plays than Iowa State’s.

I see we're still refusing to acknowledge SDSU didn't want to stick around for a Sunday game.

I get what you are saying, too. But my belief is we tried to match styles too much with Iowa today as far as offensively. Pitches, jet sweeps (D Jones, Kene, Milton), bubbles. ****, one of my first 3 plays today would have been faking the play DeShaunte scored on last week & hit someone else long. We have an experienced team so we should have been able to accomplish that regardless it being the first game.
