I've had a few days to stew on this.
The playcalling was boring. Now I'm not one to sit here and suggest I know everything there is about football. I have no doubt that Campbell, being an intelligent person and all, called those plays based on what he saw in the defense and the limitations he knew we had offensively. I was really left hoping for something to get a guy on the edge, either a sweep play or a screen pass or something. Honestly, I think Campbell trusted his defense and was hoping Montgomery would make one of those real special plays of his and bust a touchdown. But the lack of creativity, while I'm sure well thought out by Campbell, did become a burden to watch.
I guess I'm just not sure where I'm at on Kempt. I will say I think Lazard made him look good on several occasions last year. But we are going to really struggle if he wont throw the ball downfield. It becomes really hard to score when the defense basically ignores any portion of the field further than about 8 years from the line of scrimmage. But on the other end, we've certainly seen in the past how a reckless QB can throw us out of games before we know it. So I appreciate the fact he's trying to be responsible with the ball.
At the end of the day, I think this team is much better suited to beat Big 12 teams rather than Iowa. Our defensive will be a great asset in the Big 12, probably Top 3 in the league. And this offensive will get things worked out and benefit from playing against far inferior defenses.
