Horrible.

But the talk of making the homeless leave and blaming them is horrible too. Instead of just telling them to get out things need to be done to help them not be homeless.

You can't help everyone out of homelessness, not that we should stop trying, just some people want to live life their way and that is what they are going to do no matter out help is out there. The location of this homeless camp turned out to be dangerous to the area, no guarantee closing it or moving it will make Ames safer. Again that doesn't mean to don't try something.

When I was in town for the SDSU game weekend I had just noticed the jogging trail that runs adjacent to the golf course and over by VetMed, and noticed how thick the canopy of trees were and actually thought out loud, "that doesn't look safe". And with this guy being as mentally ill as he clearly is it could have been anybody that he ultimately attacked. I do think that the homeless camp needs to be (it will be) cleared out entirely as there's no reason for it to be anywhere near a college community.

Not spending thousands of dollars a year on him for the next 50-70 years would be a benefit to society. Not to mention not having to potentially deal with him when he comes up for parole/early release for good behavior.

Not saying that the death penalty is the answer, but I can see the benefit in a case like this.

He will likely get life in prison without the possibility of parole, so that is out.

I've read that the death penalty costs more than prison. Maybe since he is so young, that wouldn't be the case.

I've always thought that life in prison is a far worse punishment than the death penalty, but that just my opinion.

If they would just use a rope or a bullet instead of the designer drugs to make them peacefully fall asleep and never wake up crap it would be cheaper.

I have golfed there many times and noticed the tarps and tents in the back of the 8th tee box. Brings up the question, where are the property lines normally established around creeks and rivers? I can only assume at this time that Coldwater personnel knew of the homeless living in the before mentioned areas. I realize this is all hindsight, but could have Coldwater had them removed if they were on there property?

A beautiful, intelligent, and talented young woman was brutally slaughtered in our backyard. As a society and a community we have failed her and her family.

As far as this thread it would be nice for us to demonstrate some humanity as it might be read by those who loved her. There is an appropriate place to argue about politics and it should be directed there.

My heart literally breaks for this woman and her family.

I don’t recall feeling unsafe and was able to enjoy walking and biking the beautiful campus without fear

This isn't a generational thing. There have been sickos since the dawn of society. It's not due to some persistent issue on campus. Let's not treat this as more than it is, an unfortunate and horrifying oddity that happened to occur in our backyard. Not to say there aren't lessons to be learned, but it is still a totally random and extremely rare incident.

Ok, I get it. Can you at the minimum post a list of all "homeless camps" that are withing a stones' throw of a coed university. I want to make sure the parents of my grand daughter have it before she goes off to school.

Very nice post. I am so profoundly sad and angry that another young female student was killed in Iowa by a sick ****. Literally cannot think or speak right now. What a senseless tragedy.

I agree moving the homeless camps is kicking the can down the road.

However, we are talking about young and vulnerable people being in close proximity with people we all agree have a high rate of mental illness and substance abuse issues. People we're trying to attract to a community where we expect them to be safe and taken care of.

There is precisely zero reason to allow a hobo encampment that close to campus. None. It should be at the very least moved. If I was a student or a parent I would HAVE demanded it.

I'm just in shock still that this happened in broad daylight. I'm pretty big for a girl (6'2") and I'm a runner, but there are things I won't do alone, like: run outside when it's dark, or in secluded areas (there are tons of forested trails near my home), and I will never wear headphones because I need to stay aware of my surroundings. And it doesn't matter how strong I am, most guys are still stronger, and size really doesn't matter against a knife anyway.

But never once have I imagined that I would need to stay alert in broad daylight in such a public place like a golf course. This is sickening.

Yeah, 3 hots and a cot for the rest of his life. Maybe that's what he was after all along as a reprieve from his homelessness, and it only cost us the life of a 22 year old woman to give it to him.

SMU, ASU, Arizona, Houston, NU, Northwestern, Loyola, Temple, LSU, UT, OU, FSU, Florida, Miami...

And these are only the ones I've personally seen in the past two years.

I think what Curt was saying, and what others have, is this isn't really about the homeless. Just like the Tibbets case wasn't about illegals. It's about sick individuals that commit a horrible crime.

I am going to disagree. If this guy is in a homeless shelter or psychicatric clinic a life xcould have been saved.
