Purdy emergence increase odds of keeping CMC?

I feel like this post was taken from a few years ago and you just swapped out “Fred Hoiberg” and inserted “Matt Campbell.”

The best part is always how far the money goes in Iowa.

Although I don’t think they’re that similar. Fred didn’t try to give the impression he wanted to stay. His low buyout, particularly for the NBA, flirtation with a Minnesota, and inability to tell recruits the rumors were false made it apparent even without the benefit of hindsight. On the other hand, CMC agreed to an unheard of mutually high buyout

Nothing is 100% guaranteed.
However, listen to CMC's remarks since he's been here about building & winning long term. Also the way JP put it to him in the interview about not a stepping stone & win here & we'll build a statue of you. Hell CMC was impressed with ISU before we ever had him on staff when he brought his Toledo team in here. He's done nothing for me to not believe & trust his word.
Just my opinion but I don't think he's going anywhere for a long time if ever.

Something that I feel good about on the topic of CMC being committed to building this thing is his response to some of the previous rumors and chatter. He can certainly go into typical "coach speak" mode at times (can't fault him for it), and it would have been easy to do the same about the outside rumblings. Instead, he took offense to some of these things and felt the need to say something more and fire back.

I'm also able to recognize we won't be able to pay what some of the elite and storied programs could offer in the future if things continue on the current trend. But if we ever get to that point where he has to seriously consider a jump, our program will be at a great point and in a much better position to succeed than when he first got to campus.

I mean, I don’t personally think he’s going anywhere for a while, but if he does, then he does. It’s just funny seeing people using the EXACT same reasons they used to think Hoiberg was staying and using them for Campbell.

My personal favorite used for both is “why go to a blue blood where you’re just another name when you could build something special here?!”

I wonder if other low to mid-level programs fans are the same way.

purely speculation on the author's part, but this will be a constant fear of mine. If Meyer ever leaves, CMC will be a candidate without a doubt.

Not worried a bit. I'm more concerned with what happens in 4-5 years when all of the TV contracts expire. I do remember a couple of years ago someone saying that Iowa State needed to get really good in football, really fast.

I was having a debate the other day with a buddy that's convinced CMC will leave within a year (sqwack fan), and he made the point that it's going to be a shame when Purdy transfers because CMC leaves. I asserted that we have a lot of program momentum going and the emergence of Purdy as a potential four year starter makes him staying a lock. This is of course assuming Purdy continues to play like he has.

Am I crazy? Or more to the point, do I at least have a reasonable argument?

Remember this one thing. Matt Campbell does not even have an agent. No reason to believe he is going anywhere, except this speculation that you see that we all know is coming from the schools that we recruit against.

Hok fans are definitely worried about Coach Campbell. Iowa State is getting more above the fold coverage in the papers and on TV. Plus, we are out recruiting TOE (Jirehl Brock, Easton Dean, etc.) which makes them the little brother clowns now.

Pretty simple to me. Matt is a smart guy. He takes a look at the success rate of coaches who try this. Seriously, I can't think of more than maybe 2-3 times in the last few years a coach has taken over a big program and had success. Hoke, Charlie Strong, Rich Rod, Jim McElwain, Derek Dooley, Clay Helton, etc. Look at Willie Taggart and Frost this year. It never works. Brian Kelly and the guy at Washington are about the only recent one I can think of that you could say has worked, and Brian Kelly has been very tenuous.

Only problem with this for me though, is each of those guys had the same success rate stats from coaching changes before them. They made the leap and thought they were going to be the ones that would succeed. Not unlike any high 4* and 5* guys that could come to ISU and be THE DUDE, but instead go to Bama because they think they will be the guy to beat out the other 4* and 5* guys at their position. Supreme confidence in their abilities.

TOE fans are hoping and praying CMC leaves in a year or two. They know he's the real deal so it's the only narrative they have left. They on the other hand have baby Ferentz to look forward to.

This was the first thing the Hok-breathers said (in my neck of the woods) about CMC when he was hired: "If he has any success, he will leave." The arrogance and sense of entitlement is STRONG with them.

Same reasons, although I don’t think that makes them less valid. There are reasons a coach would go, but there are also reasons why they would not. I don’t worry about it, although CMC is proving to be exactly what has been needed for decades

Fred didn’t leave for a blueblood. In my lifetime there’s only been one coach in the two major sports that has made such a jump, and not only did Chizik have the least amount of success, there were never any illusions that he would stay here if given a chance to leave. In general those repeating the flight risk are far funnier than those that repeating the reasons to stay.

All fan bases are this way. Likely due to how few coaches jump from one P5 to another voluntarily and solely due to football capital. If anything ISU fans overstate the risk.

Matt Campbell is actually the type of coach who might stay longer term. He is making a lot of money. And in Iowa It goes a long way. Building a program from the ground floor up that has his name on it, at a place that hasn’t had much success. Energetic Fan Base. Ames is a great place to raise a family.

It is all about culture with Campbell. And character. Not sure he is that motivated by money. Or just taking over an established program that may not have the same type of underlying values that he wants in his program. Campbell has the opportunity to build a program from scratch that has the foundation he wants. Build it and he will get recognition even greater than going to a blue blood and just become another name on the list.

One can argue how or under what circumstances it happens, but Chizek won a championship with Auburn. I’d call that a success.
