It was clear to me that our staff had every intention of limiting 1st team reps last Saturday. Montgomery looked slightly bored actually, ha ha! Kansas made a lot of their big gains against our 2nd & 3rd string defense. O'Rien Vance plays aggressively, but I noticed him over pursuing on a couple run plays going for the home run tackle-for-loss and completely whiffing. Hopefully we can get up on Baylor early and they'll just want the game to be over with as soon as possible so they can get back on a warm bus.

Thought/questions for Jay. I know you have talked numerous times about rushing the ball to the edges, which I agree with. Watching the TT and KU games, the only outside run calls were for Kene, and those were in a jet sweep action. I like the idea, but seems predictable so far. DM is still only getting runs up the gut, unless he is able to bounce some of those outside.

Question 1: Why can't we get some designed runs for DM getting to the edge and in a bit of space? Is that just not in coach's scheme, or is there a personnel and execution issue that doesn't make it desirable?

Question 2: Why haven't we seen the backs utilized more in the passing game? Campbell's first two seasons I was really encouraged by that, either in the flats or out across the middle against a linebacker. Without looking, DM probably had 30 catches last year? Seems like we have completely gone away from that. I can understand sometimes needing pass protection, but that is another opportunity to get the ball to DM, Kene, Lang in space.

I am still a bit concerned about our offensive inconsistency heading down the stretch. I don't think we can just go through the motions and beat Baylor and KSU, let alone UT. The acrobatic passes to Butler and the pump-faking scrambles by Purdy are definitely nice to have, but I'd like to see a bit more convincing offensive drives and production. And I'd hate to have one of these games come down to a bunch of FG attempts instead of TD conversions.

Good thing there's a couple of basketball games this week to focus on vs. wondering about what's going to happen Saturday. Big game.

Just did some research....Campbell year 1, Montgomery had 13 catches for a 9.9 avg. 16 additional passes were completed to other RB's.

Campbell year 2, Montgomery had 36 catches for a 8.2 avg. Another 8 passes to other backs.

This season, Croney leads us with 8 catches, then DM 7, Lang 3, Seonbuchner 2, and Kene 1.

I know we have a bunch of other talented WR/TE's to throw the ball to. Just seems like a short passing game to a group of explosive backs in space would help make up for an average running game.

I noticed in the last game that there was one traditional option look (I think Kene was in there) - gained 4-5 yards! That made me happy, but was kind of disappointed we never went back to it.

Imo been in question since the Iowa game.

Kempt didn't get hurt just because of the Oline. He didn't check it off to Montgomery and it's yet to look like it's been a part of the plan.

I feel like the staff evaluates competition like they evaluate their own players. They know what they have to work with, and they match it accordingly, like a chess match. Now, as we enter the last few games of the year, these teams are not going to know which freshman they're going to have to deal with. They won't have film to identify what special talent each brings to the field,... advantage CLONES!!!

Losing Young is concerning. He was playing at a high level.

I agree 100% with this. I have been very impressed with Young's play recently. I think the coaches will move Payne back to corner and with Lewis being healthy, he will get the start at safety again.

I do hope that we have Young for this game though. The more he plays, the more it looks like we could have less of a drop off with corner play, even after losing Peavy.

I think you mean White will return to the starting lineup, which seems like the case. We could see Johnson play more and Payne back to S at times, too.

Young has been really good. Does anyone know more about his status? Sure would love to get him back for UT.

I could be wrong, but I had thought I saw more creativity in the running game against Kansas when compared to TTU; I had made a post a while ago grouching about running to the right side A gap on every first down play against TTU... To my (untrained) eye, it looked like we ran a lot more of the zone schemes, counter plays, and designed outside runs from the backfield, even if it wasn't the "jet sweep" kind of motion.

i was thinking that the reason we don't pass more to our RB's is because they're usually needed for blocking. i do think we need to try a couple plays where the RB chips and dashes to the open flat for a pass -- i don't remember seeing that in a while.

Yeah, a wheel route could be quite effective. Purdy has enough mobility to buy time for it to develop.

I also wonder how much of the playbook we hold back because we don't need to use it yet. Save them for games like Texas or CCG. We haven't needed to be very creative because either we had a strong lead or our traditional plays were working.
