I have rewatched the Butler thing 5 times and still don't see why he is getting blamed for pancaking a DB that was holding him. Ya, he went after the guy, but there isn't anything in the rules that says you can't block someone into the ground. Looked to me like he tried to get off of him and the guy grabbed his legs and pulled him back down.
For me it was what he did at the end. There was no need to put his knee on the db's chest. I don't think it was outrageous, or warranted him being called and I quote "a muslim terrorist" on the Baliff Bears chat board, but not worthy of anything like he has been accused of.

I don't disagree, but what is he supposed to do when 2 punches are thrown at him? Just stand there and take it?
On the football field, when you are wearing several thousands of dollars worth of protective equipment and the first "punch" was a helmet slap...yes. He should just take it and talk with his game.

Now if we were talking in life, no pads, swing away DM, swing away.

With how many cameras, refs, fans, and cops...but it was emotion which often trumps logic.

Um have someone grab the back of your knees while you are trying to get up and let me know how that goes.

I disagree with ever milking the clock. Especially against Texas.
  1. Apply foot to throat.
  2. Apply pressure to said throat.
  3. Increase pressure until foot meets ground or until throat and attached body no longer function.
  4. Profit.

Agreed. Not doing this almost lost the Rams the game yesterday against the Seahawks. They could have shredded the D with passes like all game long, but they decided to run the ball three times and punt it back.

It's, unfortunately, one of those elements of the game you cannot prepare for, or is at least difficult to prepare for. I was certainly surprised ISU's Eagle Scout, Chuck Bruce, was the one who got tossed. Got to say I expected more.

You should go back and watch. The knees were in his chest because that guy grabbed the back of Butler's knees and pulled him down.

If we attempted to appeal the DM suspension we would probably get the death penalty so not doing it is prob best move.

Not a valid argument. The rule banning helmet slaps was not put in place to protect a d-lineman’s hand. They are dangerous to the player taking the hit to the head. Just as much so if not more than getting hit by a closed fist. Players have suffered concussions and long term implications from head slaps. Helmets offer limited protection from impact blows.

I’m disappointed we aren’t appealing for at minimum this reason. If Campbell feels he should be suspended we can still internally suspend him. My issue is it is a load of **** that this whole situation received equal punishment. The Baylor player should have a multiple game suspension and the guy that tried to eye gouge Butler needed to be suspended.

I also think that the ultimate responsibility really lies with the failure of the officials to protect our players. They need to own that they failed to keep control of the game.

Works for me. As fans we can rehash it all we want, but Campbell has to get his guys to move on and refocus. An appeal would have been a long shot at best and a distraction at worst. Sucks for Montgomery but he'll have the whole second half to run angry.

Thread title is misleading and needs a "?" at the end. Clicked on this expecting to see some new information on the subject, not a question about what most of us know to be true.

I have didn’t see it exactly that way but understand that it could be viewed that way. I saw that 4 people disagreed w me. I understand the disagreements. I am not 100% sold on my optics but trying to view this from the optics that are least favorable to ISU. That said the refs **** the bed by not pulling the coaches together and telling them what was going to happen if there was any further bs. Their lack of diligence led directly to the outcome on the next play.

So it looks like a solid strategy to get some borderline starter pick a fight with a star player and fall on the sword to get a double ejection......

Yep, oldest Texas high school trick in the books.

FFS why is it so hard for anyone to see he didn't purposefully do this. Both knees were on the ground until he tried to get up and was pulled back down.

Just a higher standard question.......sort of like how CSP is with Lard & Talley

Lard and Talley's situation is a coach's decision and this is the second time they've been held out.

Montgomery's is a policy across all of college football and it may have been the first time he's ever done much else besides give the ball to the ref and go back to work.

I think I'd actually have more of a problem if DM didn't get suspended and CMC didn't at least hold him out for a couple series or something.

That's not due to my demeanor but clever response.

It's infuriating that ISU's players are getting a bad rap and its own fans aren't taking the time to see the concrete evidence of what actually happened.

It's bad enough that DM's punishment is justified even though it's totally atypical of him. Had a co-worker passively label him a thug today due to coverage--is that fair to DM?
