Where would you rank Prohm far as big 12 coaches go.

Maybe I'm thinking of Freddy Krueger."

I try to watch parts of every Big 12 game the entire season since they are all on TV right now. I can tell you right now Boynton is getting alot more out of alot less than Prohm.

I watch Boynton and I see a team with horrible talent putting in alot of effort. They should have swept TCU, just took Tech to OT in Lubbock and hung with Kansas all day yesterday, all this despite having the worst talent and depth in recent Big 12 history, I wont even mention all this is happening while having the most pathetic fan support in the conference.

I look at Prohm right now and see the best talent and depth in the Big 12, with the best fan support, refusing to make adjustments, a team that is flat out lethargic and disinterested in playing basketball lately, getting swept by NIT teams and constantly losing home games. We have 2 player that have loads of talent but seem more interested in their upcoming careers with the Iowa Wolves than trying to be a team player.

So yeah, its hard right now for me to put Prohm ahead of Boynton. Things might change depending on how the rest of the season, but as of right now he's hovering around the 9 line in my opinion.
ISU doesn't have the best talent in the conference. KU lost guys, but they are still rolling out McD AAs. ISU is playing the what, 240th ranked true freshman 30 plus mpg?
Let's bump this again next year when ISU finishes ahead of OSU again.
It's just not as simple as people think. Villanova, with a HOF coach, the mist sought after grad transfer in the country, two returning starters and two rotational bench guys from the national champions and a recruiting class where THT would be the fourth best player in the class is looking at the same seed as ISU about right now.

I'm not too confident limping in to March, and depending on who leaves next year is a big question mark. Not every guy is going to be Chris Beard. Dude is a flat out stud coach. The other guys that are better than Prohm have been doing this forever. Some coaches take time at this high level to figure it out. It's really his first year of his own full roster, and he's learning on the job. Maybe he will become really good, maybe he won't.

I tend to agree with your comments a lot. Agree with your first paragraph regarding annual fluctuations.
I have been a pretty big Prohm defender and supporter. But he is definitely trending down in my book. I think some of the criticisms are valid. My particular concern is in game adjustments. It just seems like we have a pre game plan, likely well conceived, but we stick to it whether it works or not. The Texas guy going 8-10 from three, many uncontested is not acceptable. We seemed so concerned about their bigs, we conceded the 3. Their bigs are not that skilled of offensive players. I also think we need at least a semi functional zone defense.
I think we overstate our youth.
Babb, Tally and Shyok are experienced 5th year players. Jacobson is an experienced 4th year player. Wigginton and Lard are experienced 2nd year players. Yes, Haliburton and THT are true freshman.
Too lazy to do the analysis, but I doubt we are younger than anybody else in the league, except maybe KSU.
I think we overstate our talent. We have good players. Are we really the best in the league? I do not think so. Everybody has talent. Based upon this year’s actual conference performances I think only Shayok deserves any all conference recognition.
Back to the original question about Prohm, too tough to rank order, but I would say bottom hslf for sure.

I agree with a lot of this, but I'd like to point out that we only have one player who has played significant minutes on a good team (Shayok). Babb didn't play much Monte's senior year.

Agree with this. Been a good season overall all things considered, but this team still missed several opportunities, which is compounded by the timing of this current slump.

It'd be nice if we could steal one from TT at home to get some of our mojo back before the tournaments. Would hate to get bounced early in both.

I'd say 7th or 8th also. I really wanted him to succeed and tried to give him the benefit of the doubt after Fred left the cupboard bare for him as far as recruiting the last couple years. However, he's really begun to lose my support this season. Like others, I'm baffled by the lack of adjustments, struggles with inbounding, curious use of substitutions, timeouts, etc. It also really seems like there is no plan B if three's aren't falling.
Prohm seems like a good guy that's proven to be a great recruiter. It's also likely that there are issues behind the scenes that we'll never know about, but I'm really starting to worry that mediocrity is his ceiling.

It's funny what we now think is mediocrity. This same type of record from 2011-2015 was considered very good. Weird.

So need a dumb button for this.

Prohm's salary is 8th in the Big 12. I would love Coach K too, but I'm a lifelong Iowa State fan and have realistic expectations and don't live and die by wins and loses.

You need to self-reflect brah.

Where did his recruiting rank in the conference this past year? I really don't follow it all that closely...I certainly don't see a big difference in abilities between ISU and that many teams.

Way up there
It's pretty interesting that this year, when we win, it's usually pretty convincing, even against teams that have more/equal talent. That tells me Prohm is pretty good between games, when his teams are ready, they're ready.

He struggles when the gameplan he's put in during the week doesn't work and he has to make adjustments. I swear after about the first 10 minutes of a game, you can tell what kind of a day it's going to be for his teams, whether or not the other coach can adjust. We rarely see a big adjustment, even if we do end up winning, its usually because 1 or 2 guys got hot, not because we did anything different.

That doesn't make him an awful coach, guys like Roy Williams have made a living being the exact same kind of coach.

I think most people who know cbb would rank him at the lower end of the coaches in our league. That says more about the other coaches that it does CSP. It should be fair to think he's a good coach but that he also gets outcoached from time to time.

In regards to “X’s and O’s”, he is near the bottom.

Fortunately, there are other things you rate a coach on: recruiting, development, ambassador, etc.

When you take those other things into account, I think he is higher than anyone has rated him.

Only raw results matter though. He will keep Iowa State in the NCAA tourney for the foreseeable future but he needs to improve his “X’s and O’s“ to take “the next step”.

Interesting comment on Roy Williams.
I think he is a very poor coach. He has NEVER been anywhere where he could not attract elite talent. I think if he was coach at the “lower” 90% of P5 schools we would never have heard of him. I think he consistently underperforms his talent. Highly skilled players certainly can make you look like a good coach. Just my opinion. Never been a Roy fan. Let alone denying knowledge of their academic fraud. BS.

And I can understand wanting to be better. But man, this board has sucked the fun out of a good season. Selection Sunday is in 2 weeks. We’ll hear our name called for the 8th time in 10 years. Not many programs in the country have that kind of sucess.
