Same, everyone knows that he never had a chance in Chicago so I figured he could probably get a low level HC gig.

The rumors of his interest make me think his job options are a lot more limited than I would have guessed.

A good way to check interest (generally) is to express some interest in an open job. That shows other programs that you are actively looking, and can trigger them to contact you more quickly.

Then you haven't watched them play recently. Playing with much more defensive effort. And just what did Fred do in Minnesota's front office, besides going around the country scouting college players - that resulted in horrid draft picks?

Yes, I have watched them. In fact, they will win less games this year than they did last year. Fred wasn't the issue with the team. He coached most of last year without a full roster, same as this year at the beginning and when you don't have a full roster of your best guys and your best guys are already one of the worst in the league. You aren't going to do much.

I don't even know what his job was with Minnesota so how can I say he did or did not do a good job. Do you know what is job was and what his duties were?

Fred seems like a slam dunk hire at UCLA.

It was interesting that when Bill Walton was asked about Fred, he had no comment. Got the impression Fred was not on his Conference of Champions list.

I want to see Nebraska lose until they drop down to Division 2. If Fred decides to hop on board that fatberg, well

This just has all the makings of an ex that cheats on you, and you got a new girlfriend that is great, but you just want the ex to be single forever because she dumped you.
Seems half the folk on here want to dump current girlfriend to get back the cheater so noone else can have her.
It’s more like the ex that left with a truthful “it’s not you it’s me” hooking up with the neighbor that’s the annoying, less attractive, but wealthy version of you, knowing full well that they’ll be doing things like let their dog **** in your yard.

This was posted yesterday morning. It would reinforce Bill's lack of comment. The biggest knock (apart from flaming out in Chicago) seems to be sample size...not enough data as a D1 HC to review. But UCLA had plenty of evidence to suggest that Al-fraud was a sucker bet so who knows?...

aTm is a better job, in a much better area to recruit too. The SEC is also not as good as a conference for BB than the Big 10 is, its improving, but not there yet.

I think Fred is a good recruiter, and there are more impact transfers now then when he really started going after them, but there is also a lot more schools doing it now, then when Fred was one of the few doing it.

Too me, Fred was burnt out on busting his butt to recruit a kid, and then have the kid end up at a different school because they were paying the kid under the table. Fred knew that was never going to happen at ISU, and even if he wanted too, there was not a large booster at ISU willing and able to supply the cash.

Maybe this has been addressed already, but do you really think ISU wasn't offering money to RV? Come on...the money was lined up.

It may be a **** hole, but it still has 65,000 more people than Des Moines (without the nearby cities). The Omaha-Lincoln corridor has more than a million. There's a reason that Interstate 80 is six lanes now between Lincoln and Omaha and 8 lanes in Omaha.

That being said...would much rather live in Des Moines than Lincoln.

Lincoln and Omaha combined only have about 63,000 more people than the DSM metro.

I’m not so sure that’s going to be an option.

I could absolutely see him using this to keep his name out there. But I think there’s genuine interest, and he would certainly be inclined to take it

Yeah right. Like really, why? I'm not blowing it off, being dead serious. Why in the world would he want to stick his foot into that $h!*show with all of his other options and no need for extra income?

IF Fred comes back to college coaching, he will do whatever he and his family thinks is best for them obviously.

I think everyone on here can agree that Fred has been an amazing ambassador to ISU through the years and put the program on the map as a player and back on the map as a coach. His departure stung due to the timing, but I get it - he had had a recent brush with his own mortality and saw an opportunity to grasp his career dream of coaching in the NBA.

If Fred coaches in college again, the fan nervousness to me stems from two areas. 1. If he coaches any team to a final 4/championship, the question will always be whether he would have done that here if he stayed and 'why couldn't that be us'? 2. If we lose recruits to him at a geographically close school like Nebraska, KU, etc. I am less concerned with #2, as Prohm and his assistants have shown a phenomenal ability to recruit. That isn't going to change if Hoiberg re-enters the market. We may lose a recruiting battle against him, but so what, we lose recruiting battles to Self too. Also, regarding #1, who knows - Prohm may coach us to a final 4/championship - he has certainly shown the ability to build and coach a team!

Fred will do what is best for him and his family, and he should. I am sure he does consider his legacy at ISU when making these decisions, but I'm also sure it will not dictate every decision he makes for his family's future.

Disagree with the bolded but otherwise agree. To put it in perspective, we've had three relatively recent POYs in the conference when it was 12 teams (Fizer, Tinsley, Ejim). Fred's Sr. year in the big 8 there were co-POYs (Minor and Big Country). As a Senior the team was a 7 seed and made it to the round of 32 while also playing alongside a 1st round pick in Meyer. He was a great player but saying he put ISU on the map as a program is a pretty massive overstatement. I don't think as a player Fred had that big of an impact on the national view of the program.

When he left it made total sense. Maybe not taking the Bulls vs. waiting for the T'wolves, but the jump made sense. Now he wants to coach again, so it certainly makes sense for him to listen to any reasonable offer for leverage if nothing else.

Fred can get a better job than Nebraska, but there are plenty of factors at play. I can fully appreciate the discomfort for his family being in Ames. I think the timing should work that he can talk to some colleges, then see what's available in the NBA and make a decision.

Clearly it’s his one true dream in life.....following coaching at Iowa state and coaching the bulls.;)

I have no issues with whatever it is Fred does next or where he coaches. However, that doesn't mean everyone has to think he has God-like status either. There is no one way to think about it.

Some people feel scorned and don't see him in the same light. That's fine. Others still get their little chubby when thinking about him. That's alright too.
