So what do you do when the shot clock expires, then the ball hits the rim? Because that's a "play on".

It didn't it flew over the rim, they stopped the clock because of a a violation. It never touched, they stopped play. Should the play not stop at the end of the 30 then? OR when they decide to stop the play maybe? I don't know, it deems like everything else is based on when things happen, why not the end of a defined 30 second period? It seems logical to me, but then maybe its not.

IF they released the ball before the shot clock expired. When that happens, the it is a play. If it never hits the rim, they stop play. I assumed that it would be at the end of the 30 seconds. Silly me. Are you an official or have the article that cites the rule and how it is implemented? That would help a lot.
